Where should we go? I have always gone to Wildwood or AC. But would like to fancy it up a bit for my birthday.
When beach tags are required can you just buy them before you go on the beach or do you have do anything else?
Re: Close & Nice beach
Avalon or Stone Harbor are also nice --- Stone Harbor has a nice downtown with shops. All of these are pretty close and easy from the AC Expressway or Route 55.
We are also Wildwood / AC people, but went to Cape May for the first time last weekend. It was awesome! They had a shopping area a few blocks from the beach that was very quaint, and a lot nicer than the typical boardwalk scene. Some great shops, a few restaurants, and good people watching.
They don't have a true boardwalk, but they have an elevated sidewalk that runs along the beach. There is also some arcades, miniture golf, cheap pizza...standard shore stuff.
The beach was nice and clean, and tags are $5pp per day or $10pp for 3 days. We brough a cooler with us, and grabbed Corona Light cans from a store just outside of Cape May. There were several groups of people also drinking on the beach, not being blatent about it though.
We stayed the night at http://www.wilbrahammansion.com/. The B&B was right next to Key West Tacos, where we grabbed a quick lunch.
Highly recommend Cape May, can't wait to go back!
OCNJ. I would recommend going to the north end of the island and going to the St. James Place beach. There are bathrooms at St. James Place and there are two places to walk to lunch--Brown's and the North End Grille. Also, parking is free on the streets. Beach tags can be bought on the beach (by the roving patrols) or at the steps to the beach (if a tagger is there). You might get lucky and never be asked. In my 10 days down there in early July, I was asked only when I entered the beach a few days. The roving patrols never stopped by.
eta: if you go mid-week, the drive should close to an hour (maybe 1:05), bridge-to-bridge (Walt Whitman to 9th Street Bridge in OC).
