Talk to me about Colorado-Estes Park and Fort Collins
We are planning on visiting Estes Park and Fort Collins in September-anyone been? Its going to be my H and I and another couple. We were thinking of trying to find an inexpensive condo to rent for two days in Estes Park, and ideas? Anyone been there and have some suggestions on what to do, etc?
TIA!

Estes - one of the many reasons I miss living in Colorado
We have stayed in these cabins before: http://www.rockymtnresorts.com/locations/lazy-r-cottages/
If you are going in late September, you should venture into the High Country to see the Aspens turning. Here is a good resource for where to go: http://mycolorado.org/fall_drives.html
As far as things in EP: Rocky Mountain National Park, obviously. Lots of wildlife up close. Hiking is great. Downtown Estes is fun. There is even a Husker shop: http://www.bigredoftherockies.com/
For food we like:

Have fun!
we've stayed here at this private home/duplex: very very nice

and also here at these condos along fall river: great deal for the money, cheapest and nicest condo you will find - and quiet - you cant beat waking up in the morning and sitting in the aidorondeck (sp) chairs along the stream wiht a cup of coffee.

Estes park is seriously my favorite place on earth..and September will be AWESOME weather there!
I want to say thats when the Elk come down.. or is that October?
Usually in the rut - which is late september, and really gets going after the first frost in October.
HOWEVER:::
The mountain pine trees are damaged by the pine bark beetles really bad, so there are a lot of dead trees - makes me sad - everything is brown unless its been sprayed. Also, Rocky Mountain National Park thought the elk herd was too thick, so they hired sharpshooters to come in and thin them out - meaning kill off a bunch.
You can typicaly find a herd on the golf course/fire station or near the lake in the mornings/afternoons.
OH!
You need to go shopping in town, and eat at the pizza place, go the rock shop, and then go buy me a big box of taffy from the little old lady's taffy shop that has the big taffy puller in the window.
Sweet jesus I want some taffy from her, right now.
LOVE that taffy-someone brought it to me once when they vacationed there. Yum!
I miss Fort Collins so much! I'd definitely do the brewery tours at New Belgium, O'Dell's, and Fort Collins Brewing. They actually have a bike tour which is pretty fun and then you aren't worrying about driving between locations. You can head up to Horsetooth either for a hike (it's a good hike) or spend time on the reservoir. Old Town has some super cute boutiques and great bars. However, being there in September the bars down there will be packed with college kids. You can go rafting or tubing down the Poudre, just depending on how far up the canyon you want to go. The Aggie is a little concert venue in Old Town that would usually pull in some great smaller bands. CSU's campus is worth checking out, the oval is beautiful and it sounds like it's going to be going away soon. The Annual Flower Trial Garden is beautiful. It's where the college is essentially developing and tweaking flowers to survive in different climates.
So many of our regular hangouts have switched names down there, so for food I don't have many recs. Pizza Casbah is to die for pizzas as well as Beau Jo's (they serve honey with their pizza to eat with the crust, yum-o). I was there for college, so we didn't hit many high end places, mostly just good bar food or little hole in the wall places. I thought of Beau Jo's and Silvermine Subs right away, mainly because I've been craving them like crazy lately.
For a place to stay there, The Armstrong is super cute and down in Old Town in the middle of everything.
