Inappropriate work attire stories

And it's not one of our summer interns.

One of our young staff (mid-20s) is wearing a strapless dress today. And it's not even a structured strapless dress with boning. It's basically a tube top with a fuller skirt.

She is fuller-figured. It does not look attractive. Or professional.

It is a trainwreck.

It's kind of like this: http://www.forever21.com/product.asp?catalog_name=FOREVER21&category_name=dress_casual&product_id=2074201263&Page=all&pgcount=25

ETA - I work in a non-profit that is on the business casual side during the summer. I am wearing gray dress pants, a black shell and a floral cardigan buttoned up and am about average in terms of dressiness right now.

  • Most of the bright young things in our office dress beautifully. But I saw a girl yesterday in a halter top. With a traditional bra. Which means her bra straps were sitting alone on her shoulders, shrieking for attention. Indifferent

I was so discouraged because I fear ignorance of the existence of strapless/convertible bras was not her issue. It was just that she didn't care.

  • Our office is relatively casual, but our office manager (also an exec admin) REGULARLY does not wear a bra.

  • Many moons ago when I was gainfully employed, there was a girl in my office who usually dressed pretty well, but one day she proved my theory that every woman needs a rearview mirror. It was casual Friday and she was wearing a pair of white capri pants that where made of a stretchy nylon/knit material. They were basically transparent, especially in back. And it was VERY apparent that she was wearing a lacy, white thong. It was all bad, bad, bad...yuck.
  • Our board of directors meeting is today.  Our interns were supposed to introduce themselves.  This idea was nixed thanks to the attire of one intern.

She's wearing a boho tunic top, with the world's tiniest, trashiest cut off denim shorts, so short the pockets are hanging out of the front.  A little like these, but more shredded:

Yeah, not appropriate, even for my ubercasual workplace.

  • At my company, casual Fridays still means you need to look decent. For example, I would wear something like a nice pair of jeans, a collared shirt, and dress shoes.

One of my former co-workers (in her mid-30's) used to regularily come in on Fridays wearing a velour track suit. If that weren't bad enough, they would be in bright colors with logos, super tight, and when she's sit down at her desk, you could see her thong.

    image

She also sometimes wore thin white pants with colored thong underwear.

Sometimes I miss her because it was always a treat to see what she was wearing on any particular day.

  • Few years ago, after the Redskins had won an important game, someone in DH's office wore a Redskins jersey to work.

The dresscode is BUSINESS casual and they work onsite with clients. DH had to tell the guy to go home and change and the idiot got all pissy and said it was only cause DH was a Cowboy's fan... really?!?

  • One of my co-workers has been regularly wearing a black strapless terry cloth bathing suit cover up, with a cardigan over it.

Honey, even with the cardigan, you're still wearing a terry cloth dress to work...

  • There's one woman in our office in particular who always wears interesting/inappropriate outfits. She's Russian, so maybe they have different dress codes there? Because she's come into the office in red leather pants before. Lots of shirts with cut-outs and whatnot. And five-inch heels.

  • There is no official dress code at my office but at least once a year a memo gets circulated about 'inappropriate office attire.'

Inappropriate includes 'pajamas, bedroom slippers, sport jerseys and shorts that do not cover your backside.'

No joke. And, the average age at my company is 50+.

  • i had way better contributions to this from my last job in NYC, most people here dress appropriately.

i guess because i've never been a tiny girl, i cannot even fathom not wearing a bra ever. nevermind with work attire. *shakes head*

  • you guys are cracking me up! nothing bad here this year -- bc our new CEO has decided no more summer casual. We're business casual all the time, except on Fridays (jeans, casual -- within reason). The biggest issue tends to always be the dreaded flip flops.

    Our policy --

You should dress in a manner that is acceptable for atmosphere. On Mondays through Thursdays, business casual is observed and on Fridays, casual attire is acceptable. On certain occasions throughout the year business attire will be observed. At that time HR will notify the staff by e-mail to inform them that business attire will be required. Acceptable business casual work attire Monday through Thursday for men typically includes dockers or khakis, crew, v-neck, turtleneck, sweater vests, long- or short-sleeved shirt with collar or golf polo type shirts. Acceptable business casual work attire for women typically includes slacks, khakis, crew, v-neck, turtleneck, sweater vests or appropriate length and style skirts or dresses for a professional environment. It is not acceptable to wear blue jeans, or jeans of any color, dungarees, flip flops, or athletic shoes at any time Monday through Thursday. You may dress more casually on Fridays, unless announced otherwise. Appropriate casual attire includes jeans that are clean with no holes, non-denim shorts (cotton, i.e. khakis), capri length pants and sneakers/tennis shoes It is not acceptable to wear tight- fitting shirts, halter tops, tube tops, midriffs, leggings, spandex pants, tight stirrup pants, short shorts beach type clothes, suggestive clothing, t-shirts (including those with pictures, decals and/or writing ? even AIA T-shirts, athletic clothing of any kind, including gym shorts, sweatshirts, sweat pants, flip flops beach shoes or sport sandals, hats or excessively short skirts or other provocative clothing at any time.

    "What is a week-end?"
  • Last week one of my coworkers wore shorts - I posted about it on MM. Verdict - NOT ACCEPTABLE.

  • This summer, the management offices are allowed to have business casual Fridays. To me that means a non-revealing and appropriate (read knee length) sundress and wedge sandals, white pants and a top, etc.

The past two Fridays I have been at work I have seen the following outfits both worn by women:

    1. Black leggings with a rhinestone fleur de lys on the leg, long tank top, and sandals

    2. Revealing (read: boobalicious) black and gold tank top, black capris, black gladiator sandals, big gold hoop earrings, and chunky gold necklace. I wasn't sure if I was still in my building or had made a wrong turn and was at the club.

When I worked at Ohio State, people would regularly wear jeans and football jerseys to work on Fridays during the fall. I would wear jeans and an OSU polo - I couldn't bring myself to wear a football jersey to work!

  • I always want to follow some girls I see on my way to work to see where they work and the attire they are wearing is appropriate.  I'm talking short skirts, revealing tops, and platform high heels.  Wow!  No personal stories from the office though.  My floor is pretty boring fashion wise!
  • Pam&John - most of the time, my shoes would be out of compliance in your office.  I'm "that" person who wears sneakers all day at my desk, and only dons the heels for meetings.  :)

ChCh - we have a policy, I should have clarified that it's not always followed. :) There 's a woman here who this summer has taken to wearing tank tops that have very wide arm holes so her side boobs are falling out. All the time. Just bc you layer them does not mean the girls are contained. I think she's daring management to say something, frankly, so she can call diversity.

The sneaker rule is not enforced. We are spending all our time following the flip flop conspiracy. Srsly.

    "What is a week-end?"
  • We have a rather strict business dress code policy.  (Yay for being owned by a bank...)  I have three coworkers that notoriously wear clothing that is completely inappropriate.

Coworker 1: (57 years old) wears he daughters (22 y/o) clothes to work, so they are all lowcut, short skirts.

Coworker 2: (48 y/o) wears sundresses that are very lowcut in the front and most are backless. She doesn't wear a camisole or sweater, so he girls are usually hanging out and you see a lot more than you should.

Coworker 3: (52 y/o) has every inappropriate combination you can think of (and most you would never consider wearing ever...) for example, a lime green vinyl mini skirt, with a red tank top and a black mesh shirt over it, with lime green thigh high boots with a six inch heel.  Or the hot pink mini skirt with a black tank top and orange button up shirt, and 6 inch stelletos.  And I could go on and on...it's kind of sad and tragic.  It's always a treat to see what combination she is going to come in here wearing...and about 99% of completely inappropriate and I have no idea why no one says anything to her, they all just laugh behind her back...

  • The admin in my office really pushes the limits, but one time she wore a t-shirt "dress" (basically, just a giant t-shirt). It was purple with gold writing, from some tourist locale. It was very tacky. Of course, flip flops to go with that, but I can't really say anything about that since I am wearing some myself today (in my defense, they are of a dressy variety, and I am only wearing them because my desk is now a standing desk and I had to wear heels part of the day for a meeting).

  • At my old law firm, our receptionist always had crazy outfits.  The worst was when she showed up to the holiday party in some gold lame 2 piece deal that was bare midriff.  She had no problem taking her wig off to scratch her head while greeting clients.

I also had an intern assigned to me who showed up for his first day in shorts and birkenstocks.  His father is a major partner, at a major law firm.  How could he NOT know better?  I sent him down the back stairs, but the HR lady saw him anyway and sent him home.

Today at my government job - literally 5 seconds ago, I saw a guy in shorts and tennis shoes.  Neither of which fall within our dress code.  This is the second time this week I've seen him in shorts.  I thought he was wearing them into the office and then changing into long pants, but nope.

I love slips! They smooth things out, they keep you from being embarrassed... what's not to like? I do feel like a grandma when I slip on my oh, so, sexy beige polyester half-slip, but it serves a purpose.

glad i'm not the only one!! i only wear them when necessary. i actually have a black one (from jockey, i think) and while i remember thinking it was kind of expensive for something no one sees, it was totally worth it.

Did anyone ask why the event was altered instead of sending the person home?

I'm just floored when people blatantly disobey dress code yet their boss or HR says nothing.

  • i used to work with a very, very, very large woman (note: i'm not small. this woman was likely morbidly obese) who designed her own *mini skirts* and *low cut tops* & wore them to work.  she was a very sweet woman & a good worker, so I guess it was just accepted that you'd see waaaaayyyy too much of her every.single.day?  it was better in the winter when she'd wear tights under her mini-skirts.  Summertime = bare legs.  Surprise
