So my hubby and I have a big decision to make. We have a few options as to where we will be stationed next spring. He recently extended his contract for two more years and is starting a broadcast journalism job that can send him to either Ft. Bliss, Texas, Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, Italy or Germany. I don't know what the exact bases are overseas. I'M leaning more towards Italy or Germany just because it would be nice to travel a bit before we have kids and such. He agrees but his only concern is if he gets deployed (which he probably will) I'll be stuck in a foreign country and away from my family.
Does anyone have any experience in being stationed overseas and what kind of community there is among the wives/families? Or simply, if you had to choose out of our options, what would you pick?

This isn't even a question I'd have to consider. Overseas hands down. Our conversation would be more like how can we help our chances of going overseas and avoiding being at those stateside locations.
B/t Germany and Italy, we weren't (this last time around) willing to request Italy just b/c of the job situation. In a few years when I have more experience, we'd love it. Germany is big enough for me to find work. Some of that is dependent on my field, though.
I can't imagine my answer would be any different with kids. Someone paying me to live in Europe, yes please.
Although, I have to ask how this is your decision to make. Maybe they treat you different, but we look at it as a polite request, at best, that they can ignore in any way they choose. Having had orders for one country changed for another country, within 20 days of departure, I don't believe anything until I'm on the ground.
In all honesty, if you're the type of person who wants a close knit group to have a comfortable on base life, maybe you should leave the spot for someone who's more into exploring. I knew people who literally never drove themselves off base in Japan. They went off base (when someone else drove) but it meant they never explored on their own, even when spouses deployed for months. What a freaking waste of an opportunity.
However, if you want to explore but have trepidation about doing it on your own, you'll definitely be able to find others to go with you and bolster your courage.
Like ITT! We had awesome tours through them and outdoor rec!
I can't imagine not going overseas while in the military. For me, it's been the biggest perk of serving. I got to go TDY to freaking Italy for three weeks to play softball. America is awesome too and I've loved living in different places, but to have a job, a built in community, and discounted travel opportunities in Europe, touring the Pacific northwest and the upper east coast can wait.
When people ask if H will go career, pretty much the answer is "well, they keep bribing us with a subsidized life abroad...." Although, I'm not sure if I count a remote to Korea as a perk exactly. Still, we're just starting the 3rd consecutive overseas, although I'm reluctant to call Hawaii overseas
We'll take the free COT flight, though!
I haven't had a ton of success with ITT, as for a couple it's often cheaper to do things on your own, plus you have more freedom, but we've been appreciative of the opportunities. I definitely liked when outdoor rec put together a ski trip that included the bus ride of 5 hours each direction. No way did I want to do that on my own
thanks for all the feedback! it sounds like going overseas would be the anonymous choice. Its definitely something we are excited about!
