Holy *%@$ hold me back!

So I joined a facebook page for the base that we are on in hopes of meeting people. It's a very active page but the majority of posts I've seen have been pretty dumb and from girls who are like 20 so I haven't had much luck.

Anyway, today a girl posted about seeing someone on base smoking while pregnant. Everyone who responded had the appropriate "omg" response but one person said(direct quote)

"well anything that enters our blood stream never gets into the babies blood cause they most of the time come out with a different blood type then we have. it all has to go thur the placenta. not saying its a smart thing to do, but theres not any medical proof smoking itself is bad in pregnant. at lease from the research my husband has done. I WOULDNT light up pregnant or at all. just saying"

IDIOT. Words cannot explain that kind of stupid. I obviously had to respond and told her I could give a million articles explaining how smoking is bad while pregnant.

I cannot believe that in 2011 there are people who could still say stuff like that.

ETA: I have now calmed down and apologize for the drama of my title, I got a little heated Wink

Re: Holy *%@$ hold me back!

Honestly, the smoking isn't even the worst of it, considering I once heard a nurse say she was glad she smoked b/c her baby was 10lbs, so the growth restriction was a good thing.  I'm learning to become immune to basic stupidity, like the bump post today on how vaccines aren't good b/c they pollute the gene pool.

The blood type misunderstanding (most of the time it's different?  Does she realize there are literally only 4 phenotypes?) as a justification is the most ridiculous part IMO.  What does blood type have to do with anything.  Does she think that babies don't receive oxygen or nutrients either?

    At lease I'm not stupid.

Honestly, she sounds so dumb I'd probably try to patiently explain how blood exchange works, blood types are inherited, and how nicotine (and other toxins) are small molecules, just like the good stuff we want going to the baby.  Insulin is a lot bigger than nicotine, for instance.

I'm going to call her ignorant rather than stupid as she claims to have research.  A lot of people get piss-poor scientific education, so for a first attempt, I'd try to remedy that.  Service to humanity and all that.

Agreed, this is totally the case.

At "lease" she claims her husband has research...

When I was in a the military I worked with a girl who smoked her entire pregnancy. I thought that the military should've had rules against it. I used to stay pissed off about it.

  • My mind is blown. I have no other words...I'm speechless.

    Photo bomb, yeah!
  • She has told me like 3 times that her husband has done the research. Tongue Tied Apparently she can't think for herself.

  • Wow.  Its truly amazing how little people care to know about their body.

I am on a similar site for my base and its pretty much the same disappointing type of people.

  • Wow!! Am I missing something, last time I checked it is 2011 and there is ton of studies that show smoking is bad for everyone even second hand smoking. I am sure that any OB would beg to differ that smoking while pregnant is not a good thing.  I feel so sorry for people that are just so clueless.
  • The warning, by law, is right on the pack. Maybe if you only bum cigarettes and thus don't see the warnings on the pack, they don't apply to you.

Well, duh!  Cigarettes are only bad for you if you buy them.

This reminds me of a woman I was waiting on back in the day.  I didn't see her walk in.  She was sitting at a booth with a guy when I took their drink order, margarittas.  I brought them their lunch and two more margaritas before she got up to go to the bathroom.  She had to be about 6 months pregnant.  I was pissed!!

I went to the table and just started clearing plates.  Didn't really care if they were done yet.  She walked back and asked for another drink.  When I asked if she was pregnant, she told me to mind my own buisness.  I said I'm the one mixing the drinks that are poisoning your child, it is my buisness.  Then I told her I hoped her baby was born ok, but for her to prepare to deal with fetal alcohol syndrome and all the side effects that go along with it for the rest of the child's life.  She threatened to call the cops on me for some reason and said she was writting a letter to the owner because of my behavior.  "The owner is my brother.  He'll tell you the same thing I'm about to tell you.  You are abusing your child before it is even born.  Pay your bill and get the F out."

Ahh! I'd high five you if I had gotten to see that!!!

It's disgusting how little people care. I think some of that is because of the invincibility mentality some people have ("Oh, other people have babies that have problems").

I think I'm the opposite.... I'm petrified that when I finally have a baby, that something I'm inadvertently exposed to, that I didn't choose to put in my body, will affect him/her. Like the mandatory vaccines the military likes to make you take, environmental pollutants that aren't supposed to be there per EPA regulation, but ARE, especially in water sources... etc. etc.

Maybe I'll live in a bubble for a year while we are TTC... and for the 9 month duration of my pregnancy.... and while I BF....

Yo! Didn't you know that if your husband does the research, then any findings in said research is totally legit?!?!!

Good Lord, seems like she got an extra hard beating with the stupid stick.

Seeing a pregnant coworker smoke would irritate me as well, but you cant expect the government/military to set guidelines on who can and can't smoke. I can see that arguement going nowhere good quick.

Hell they set guidelines for everything else. And since they pay for the healthcare of that child and the pregnant mother (she was active duty), I feel like they should absolutely set guidelines. B/c if they choose to kill themselves by smoking, the child doesn't have a say so. So I don't believe they should have the choice to willing harm their child... which is exactly what'd they'd be doing.

You can't tell a person how to raise their child. Even after the child is born they could be exposed to second hand smoke whether they wanted to or not. But you cant tell a soldier, or any parent, that they cant smoke near their child.
