National Ballon Classic

I am on my own with the kids today.  I was thinking about taking them down to Indianola to watch the balloon lift-off at 6:30.  Has anyone been?  Will maneuvering a stroller be a nightmare?  Is it worth driving in the car for 30 minutes or whatever to see it with a 3 yo and a 1 yo?  Would I be crazy to do it on my own?  I have lived in the metro for a long time and this is one of those things I haven't made a priority.

Re: National Ballon Classic

  • We went last year. There's a park/baseball field right before you get to the actual balloon fields. We parked there and had a picnic and let the girls run around. We didn't have to pay to park that way but had fantastic views of the balloons.

We also learned that they may not lift off at 6:30. I'm not sure if they just start filling them at 6:30 or if there was a delay but they didn't actually start going up until 7:30.

  • As a nataive of Indianola - The park Mrs Reem is talking about is Pickard Park.   It is a very nice area for a picnic and straight across the street from the balloon field.   I've never actually been with a stroller, but I'm going to assume it will be a pain...it is all grass and no sidewalks.   The weather plays a BIG roll in what time the balloons actually go up.   They need to test winds and all that before the balloons can actually fly.

I'm not sure if that helped.   Also, I think, the Warren County fair is in town right now too.  That is on the same Hwy, just on the West side of town (balloons are on the East).   It's a very small fair, but if your kids like animals there are lots there :)

  • Thanks for the info ladies.  Still trying to talk myself into it. 6:30 would be doable but if they don't take off until 7:30 the heat will get to all of us and we might all be bored.  I did find a number of the website.  The man that answered said they don't know until 5 minutes before liftoff what time they actually ascend.
