Cricut Personal Electronic Cutter
Hello, I'm new to this forum. I'm thinking about getting the Cricut Personal Electronic Cutter (it's on sale right now at Joann's for 59.99 vs 199.99!) But I feel like I don't fully understand everything it can do. Like do you need to buy a lot of cartridges to get the full benefit? I watched a video on cricuts website & it made it sound like you can choose many fonts (but is this from one cartridge?) Any help would be appreciated if anyone has used this before.
Re: Cricut Personal Electronic Cutter
There's great info in the FAQ at the top of the board.
Yes, you need cartridges to have the machine cut. When I got my machine, I was able to download 3rd party software (Make the Cut) that would allow me to take any image from the internet and connect my Cricut to my computer. Unfortunately, Provocraft (who owns Cricut) has sued those companies and you are no longer allowed to do that. I can still use mine, but I can't download any updates to the software and there is no longer any "support" for it.
I'd recommend looking into the other cutters out there. Most don't require cartridges and support 3rd party software (MTC and Sure Cuts Alot). Under A Cherry Tree has some great comparisons on cutters.
BTW, Silhouette is coming out w/ a cutter in October that will cut at 12" (their current one doesn't). I'm hoping I get Bday money so I can get one when it comes out!

It can do a bunch of stuff! I have a whole blog for cricut crafts.
If you thinking you want to be able to download/design your own then you want to look into another cutter. I've NEVER paid full price for a cartridge, I typically pay between 20-30 depending on the newness of the cart. Let us know if you have questions about any of the systems, everyone here is super nice.

The Personal Electronic one comes with one cartridge that does letters, basic shapes, and a few other things. I just bought it two days ago to use for making posters for my classroom.
It is a good idea to buy the Cricut Tool Kit and Spatula to help get the paper off of the mat easily. If not, the paper can stick to the mat and can be VERY difficult to get off.
Overall, it's a great machine and I like that it's small. You can buy as many or little catridges as you would like and they go on sale often ($39.99 instead of $89.99 or less!). It really depends on what shapes and things you want as for how many you need.
I hope this helps!
