Cool baby gift help

DH and I are friends with one of the Texans players and his wife.  They are having a baby in a couple of weeks.  I want to give them something unique, boutiquey, etc, instead of just something from their BRU registry.  I'll probably still get them something they registered for, but also want to get them something different.

Can anyone recommend a gift and where to get it?  Also, where are the baby boutique places in Houston/SL?  I know there is one in the Villiage.

Extra points if I can get it online...I don't really care to go in to baby stores at this point...but will if I have to.

Re: Cool baby gift help

  • I got some really cool things by Kathe Kruse. They are quite popular European toys (which is what the sales person told my aunt). She purchased them at a boutique in Chicago- but I did a quick google search and saw that they do sell them online.

My favorite one that I got is similar to this. It's a towel doll, and apparently the caregiver (mama) is to sleep with it for a few days and that way it holds their natural smell. This is suppose to be very comforting to have the familiar smell.

The dolls are beautiful, very soft, and unlike any of the other generic gifts I received.

  • I'm a big fan of stuff like this... http://www.etsy.com/listing/74333470/organic-wood-teether-toy-polka-dot?ref=sr_gallery_27&ga_search_submit=&ga_search_query=Teething+toy&ga_page=2&ga_search_type=handmade&ga_facet=handmade I like the teething necklaces and handmade teethers on Etsy. I have loved giving/receiving muslin blankets, the gift of photography and my go-to for baptisms and some births depending on the kiddo are these dolls/animals. http://babybeblesseddolls.com/ Amelia got one for her baptism and it's still my favorite gift. It's thoughtful, well made, was custom to coordinate with her nursery and it was given by some of my favorite people.
  • The Smithsonian catalog has some cool gifts.  This was given to Maddie (hers doesn't have a black piece but it's basically the same):

Their online store doesn't have their full selection - look through the catalog.

  • I have bought one of those personalized blocks, which was well received, however, you would need to wait until after the baby is born.

What I have received from showers that I liked have been personalized cute burp cloths, or if it's a girl, I have given personalized bloomers before (for under dresses).    (The place I got them from doesn't look like it's in business anymore, but there are tons of things on etsy.) I have also received personalized cards with the baby name on it - to write "Thank Yous" for the baby showers. Pretty much anything personalized is nice - picture frames, etc.

I also got a (real) silver sippy cup and baby spoon from another friend, if your friend would like that sort of thing.

  • In addition to all of the above ideas, check Doodles in the Village. I usually go there, find what I want, & then purchase it online.(sorry, I don't like their sakes associates...SNOBBY!)

I agree. I don't even know how they stay in business with that level of service...

There is a great shop in the Heights called Tulips & Tutus. They have stuff for both boys and girls, but more for girls. Still, very cute/creative baby gifts.

You might want to just get them something from the registry for now and then give them something personalized after the baby os born. That always makes a lasting impression and is much appreciated. I usually do big, hooded towels from a couple of different etsy sellers.

  • I love to give Bla Bla's. Best baby love dolls ever. Can't wait to buy 50 for my pretend kids.

  • Hmm.  Gift Certificate toward baby portraits?  ; )

Blue Leaf in the village has some REALLY adorable baby things, and it's not a "baby store", so there is plenty of other stuff to look at.

PBK also has a really sweet little frame to put baby's picture in with the little piece of foam-clay for their hand or footprint.  That is my go-to gift for anyone special, especially those that are not within shooting distance of me (because I generally just give them a gc for pics).

  • Duh- totally forgot, if you're going down to the Village, try Purple Mango before you even step foot in Doodles. The women who work there are really nice and they have some wonderful gifts, including the Bla Bla dolls that BettyJoe mentioned.

Large, soft hooded towels are my favorite gift to give.  We received one for Tori and she still uses it frequently.

I got one of these at a shower, and when DS was born, I remember thinking - "who uses these, they are ridiculously large?!" (of course, for a newborn). I almost gave it away.  Now, it's the perfect size and we use it all the time!!!  lol.

  • I buy a lot of stuff here: http://taggedbytiff.blogspot.com/  She is local and I usually get my stuff the next day.

Having just had a baby, I really, really, really, really, really preferred that people just spent the $ on buying registry items unless they knew me well enough to know what I would love to buy something not on my registry.  I even got personalized stuff that was cute but not really my style or not anything we needed.  Someone just sent 8 monogrammed cloth bibs.  I already had a lot of bibs and probably won't use cloth ones anyway, you know what I mean?  Extra special burp cloths are alwasy good though, we go through them like candy around here.
