Church

We've been slow to find a church since we moved to IA. Would anyone care to give a recommendation?

I feel like placing a 'personal' ad - seeking: small-medium size, welcoming/inviting of people of all walks (my DH is Jewish but non-practicing), I guess it sounds weird to define it as 'fun, light, and enjoyable' ... but we really are looking for a more informal friendly atmosphere.  Our son being African American we would love a church that is more diverse (though of course that might not be realistic out here in the 'suburbs').

Thanks for any recommendations

Re: Church

  • How about Unitarian? We've been meaning to check out the DSM UU but haven't gotten around to it.

  • I'm a member (and employee) at Lutheran Church of Hope.  I might have a biased opinion since I work there but I LOVE it!! It looks HUGE on the outside but it feels like a small church during worship.  Pastor Mike (our main Pastor) does a great job of putting The Word into today's society and makes it easy to comprehend.  There are many ways to meet others and get involved also.  All in all, I feel that it is a very welcome place.  The ladies in the nursery are wonderful and will love on your little guy!!!
  • We have also recently started attending Lutheran Church of Hope and we really like it.  It is a huge church but we go to the 8 am traditional service which is a much smaller community.  Of course the traditional service might not have the fun, light, enjoyable aspect as far as music goes (it's hymn based) but I think the sermons are really great and would fit what you are looking for.  If you ever want to check it out we could meet you guys there sometime.

  • Thank you so much for the responses and the offers to help us settle. I'm going to look at the websites and talk to DH. I really think we would benefit from the community interaction and spiritual balance.
  • Our church feels exactly how you describe.  We go to Crosspoint UMC.  I think it would be a bit of a drive for you though, as it's in Bondurant.  It's a smaller community just East of Ankeny.  The pastor that married us started this church and it's still growing, but it's held in the middle school auditorium.  It's not extremely diverse, but my H is AA and he feels very at home there.  Everyone adores our children.  There are a few other interracial couples as well as some adopted minority children.  Let me know if you want more info!
