DOTB: Boarding a dog?
We are going out of town for 5 days in a couple of weeks. Our original plans for the dog have fallen through so now I'm looking at other options. I've never had to deal with putting up a dog while on vacation and am not sure what options are worth considering. Seems I've heard some questionable things about some kennels, upcharges for various things, etc.
We have a medium-sized dog, very sweet, likes to run, craves attention.
What kinds of things should I be asking to ensure a place is reputable? What is a ballpark range I might expect to spend (i.e. per day or week)? What kinds of upcharges are worth it/which are not? Any places to recommend or to steer clear of??

We've used Molly's Mutthouse (34th and Shepherd) in the past and more recently we've started to use Petsmart because its closer to our house (Bunker Hill location) and you can drop off/pick up during business hours. At Molly's there are certain hours which was hard for our travel schedule. I think the rate is $27 per night for the basic suite. We usually pay for some extra doggie day care time too so he can be around other dogs.
A plus for Molly's is they actually have an outside area for the dogs to relieve themselves and Petsmart has an indoor "park". At first I was concerned that our dog would want to pee inside since he did it at Petsmart but he was fine when we came home.
The main thing for us was we didn't want him in a cage. Both of these places have "rooms" that are pretty spacious.
I board my dogs at a pet resort in the north side of town. I have boarded them at Petsmart if the place we usually go is booked. We pay $23 per day, which includes food and letting them out 3 times a day. Some placed charge by the size of your dog.
The things I would ask if the meal is included. What is the bedding option? How big are the kennels? What are pick up and drop off times? Can you tour the facility? Are the kennels indoors or outdoors?

When we lived on the north side of town, we used to board with ABC Pet Resort. The dog always came home happy and healthy and we had no complaints. They were 25ish a night or so? I have a small dog, and all we really cared about was that he was indoors (although we like the indoor-outdoor runs too) and walked several times a day.
They had a few little upgrades we'd do sometimes, like an extended play session. But by and large we didn't bother with upgrades. I think the TV upgrades some places offer are ridiculous.
Most kennels will require your dog to be fully updated with shots and have a recent bordatella vaccine.
We haven't found a kennel we like on the south side yet.
This is who I use. We love them! We do weekend parties...they have so much fun!

We are planning on checking this place out since we moved. We have heard good things. Our old place is too far now (Best Little Dog House in Tx). Both of these places offer an alternative to traditional boarding which we prefer for our pup.

I'm not sure where you are in The Woodlands anymore... same area as when we were neighbors?
My FAVORITE is Forest Shadows on 1488. But, they are $$. Its $24 a day and they say they get 3 walks. You can add doggie day care or swimming for a fee. http://www.forestshadowspetresort.com/ When I'm boarding the dog for a longer period, I always use Forest Shadows and get him a few days of day care so I know that he is happy.
I've also used that kennel/grooming place on 2978, when you turn Right off Woodlands Parkway, just a minute up the road on the left. I forget the name. I don't think the pups get as much play time but I do think they take good care of the dogs. I forget the rates, but it was much cheaper than FS.
