Umm...OPSEC?

http://waronterrornews.typepad.com/home/2011/07/ca-rotorheads-leave-iraq.html#more

Why is it that we go through all of these measures to make sure we keep our guys/girls safe and news sites can make an entire article about a unit flying from Iraq and arriving tomorrow at a specific location. How does this not violate OPSEC?

Sometimes I wish we had less media involvement so 1. there wouldn't be so much criticizing about an already too politically correct military and 2. so they wouldn't post travel information and announce worldwide the DAY that we must pull out of Iraq or a specific FOB.

Vent over.

    THIS.

  • It sounds like they are already in the states and are Demobbing. But with a article like this there has usually been A. a press release that was given to the media and what information they could release, or B. a fake date given out to throw off everyone.

  • I'm willing to bet there was a release from the Public Affairs Office.

  • I can certainly see how that would be frustrating for you. But like PP said, the details given to the media could be a little ....off. Just enough.

  • Yeah, it can be frustrating when we're all trying to keep things quiet and then the media gives out info. But I agree with PP that info has probably either been given to them, or is off.

I just remember for sensitive info (or will remember when DH deploys- he hasnt been deployed yet) that its not my job to declassify information. If media gives it out, doesnt mean its correct or has officially been declassified- and if it has, if I/DH hasnt been specifically told it is declassified, its not my job to spout off about it.

Its like the wikileaks stuff. Those documents are still classified- just because its out there doesnt mean its ok to look at it or talk about what they contain- DH's security clearence and job could be jepordized if he's found to be looking at it.

  • .   "The battalion wrapped up its yearlong tour in Iraq in late July and is expected to arrive at its home station of Los Alamitos, Calif. around Aug. 1."

Since the article was only released yesterday, they were probably already back in the U.S. and considered safe anyways.  Also, they are just saying around Aug. 1st, which isn't an issue if they are already back in the U.S.

I really only have experience with Navy deployments, but I know once the ship is back in non-hostile waters they are more liberal with the release of info.  Also, once it is inside the 48 hour window, the release of information isn't a violation of OPSEC.

However like Jilly said, unless I've been given word from the command, or it is released on the ship's FB page, I don't share any news or info.

  • I understand that most have permission and that some spouses who post "hubby's flight comes in on the 5th at 7:15pm in Dallas!!" need rules to teach them that it is not okay. However, I don't always agree with what is ALLOWED to be posted. I'm not okay that there's a day thrown out about when DH's FOB will close down. I don't care if they close it down a couple days to a few weeks early. I don't want any hint to be given that could put my husband in danger. The American people feeling "in the know" about the war is not worth my husband's life. Sorry.

  • H's ship deployed recently and it was all over the local news.  We've talked about it in FRG meetings about how frustrating it is that the news has all this info, yet we aren't supposed to tell anyone when they will leave/return.  I definitely understand your frustration.
