Americans in Belgium ... The American Store?

There is this store that a friend sent me online in Antwerp called 'The American Store' and apparently they sell American/Mexican food goods. My DH heard some negative reviews, but we plan to check it out soon. Has anyone been?

  • Never heard of it (not in Belgium but have friends there), but there is an online store in Lux that you can use... [link]http://www.americana.lu[link/] I've used them a few times, never had any issues.

  • Hey there, welcome back! We haven't heard from you in awhile!

I remember when I lived in China we used to take a 14 hour overnight train just to get to an American Store in Beijing for a day - it was sooooo worth it every time!

As well, most of us stock up on foodstuff pretty good every time we go home - and if people come to visit we tend to load them up like pack mules with things like pepto-bismol, tylenol and mexican salsa spices. Yummers!

Anyway, I don't know if anyone on the board has been to that particular store - but if it sells American / Mexican stuff it's got to be good!

(oddly enough, we even found a Chinese supermarket here in London that sells A&W Rootbeer... so you can find stuff if you search for it practically anywhere!)

Anyway, welcome back to the board! How long have you been in Belgium now?

  • I'm not in Belgium, so I don't know the store and know nothing about how it's being reviewed. You probably won't be disappointed.

A few pointers though, to adjust expectations:

Don't expect it to have everything you can buy in the US, don't expect it to be a big store, don't expect it to have large quantities and don't expect it to be affordable. If you go in there with that mindset, you can just be excited about the chocolate chips and baking soda, instead of possibly being disappointed.

Go, shop and have fun :-)

I just returned back full time last week. I am in the process of registering as foreign resident in Belgium. From what I can tell now I only have one more step.

  • As Tofu said you can find stuff at weird places sometimes.  I buy bulk banking soda and white vinegar at a Chinese store.

There is an ethnic aisle at one supermarket not too far from my house which has grape and orange soda, and Ortega products, as well as other Mexican stuff.

I found Aunt Jamima at TK Maxx.

Also bring lots of stuff back, have visitors bring you stuff.

    Good luck!

    How was the wedding?

  • We've found American Coca Cola Vanilla cans in the cardboard fridge packs at the regular Swiss grocery store for about $17 a pack. I'll pass on those but I've had decent luck just going to the high end grocery store or a ethnic food store. Even the English bookshopnhas some American and Uk box mixes.

  • I've been to the store :) A lot of things were more expensive than I was willing to pay but they had a great sale section. We got cake mix, frosting, Reeses pb cups, pretzels, cornbread, diet cherry coke, crystal light, shells and cheese, and beef jerky. Haha I was pregnant at the time so it was an impromptu trip. I was on a mission and it was successful.

  • Dutch or french Belgium? I found out a lot of equivakents in Dutch so you can buy them at your local instead of paying through the nose at the American store. Sadly, I don't know French so couldn't help with that part of it. Oh, and don't be afraid to ask for specific recipes- many of us have had to resort to making it from scratch (pumpkin pie without canned pumpkin comes to mind) and would be happy to share info with you.
