Hand Quilting

Has anyone here ever hand quilted? I am heading to my LQS today to look at hand quilting thread because I *want* to learn. Stitched In Color posted this tutorial last week that seems pretty simple and straight forward but, to be honest, I am scared to death to try.

So, hand quilters, should I be scared or is it pretty straight forward?

I want to add some hand quilted detail to the t-shirt quilt... most just some straight lines. ;)

Re: Hand Quilting

  • I inherited a beautifully hand quilted and embroidered quilt from my grandma so when I saw that tutorial I really wanted to try it. I just finished my quilt top and will hopefully get to start quilting tonight (if I get the time). I'm a little scared but it soulds pretty straight forward. It is just straight stitching with equal sized stitches... How hard can that be, right?

I'm actually horrible at hand stitching so this maybe a challenge. Let me know how yours goes. GL.

Straight lines and even spacing terrify me. :) I think I might have to draw a line and make dashes with a water soluble pen/marker my first few times.

Haha,  I'm going to have to start with a straight guideline too.

  • I hand quilt to relax. Its not hard just make sure your stitches are even and going thru all the layers. :) There is also a thing called quilters tape. Its 1/4'' wide. So you can stick pieces of that along the spaures your stitching. It can be peeled up and stuck back down a bunch of times. It really helps! I would also suggest a leather or pliable thimble of some kind. Or your fingers are going to be really sore.

  • I've never hand-quilted, but the quilting in that tutorial is so pretty!

A friend's MIL grew up w/ Amish neighbors and learned to quilt from them. All of the quilts she makes are done from start to finish by hand. As a result, it takes her forever to finish one quilt.

  • My mom hand quilts all of her quilts. She has 4 long pieces of wood that make a frame(they take up all of the living room). Her stitches are much smaller, I think she does amazing work.
