Moms RE: Hospital Bag

Since we are down to single digits I should probably start packing. What things did you need and what could you have done without?

Thanks!

Re: Moms RE: Hospital Bag

  • I loved having a change of comfy clothes for the days after delivery. It was easier to stay in the gown the day of and part of the following day for me, but I felt like a whole new person once I put my own clothes on.

I brought the boppy and breast pump but ended up not using either. At that point it was easier to use the hospital pillows than the boppy. (Now I love it, though.)

Definitely bring something for entertainment/distraction for you and DH. I've also heard to bring a picture (sonogram, soothing place, whatever) to focus on when you are pushing.

  • Socks!

If you're having the footprints put on anything, take that and have it handy.

Change of clothes and toiletries for feeling like yourself again after a shower.  (Although I stayed in a hospital gown until it was time for me to leave...was comfy for me.)

I didn't use anything I took for James except for onesies and a blanket for the ride home.

  • I pretty much did without everything I packed.  I ended up packing 2 bags, one for L&D and one for my postpartum stay.  I used nothing out of my L&D bag since labor was fairly short and I labored in the tub the whole time.  I packed clothes that I had planned to change into for recovery but I was bleeding so much that I just wore the hospital gowns the whole time I was there.  I did pack & use my own body wash/shampoo/conditioner for a shower and toothbrush/toothpaste.  I ended up just wearing the same clothes home that I went to the hospital in.

For the baby we used more out of his bag....his going home outfit and we also took his baby book so we could get his footprints.

  • I'm sure you know all the practical things: snacks, chargers, gatorade, change of clothes & toiletries for DH, camera, extra batteries, etc.

Many people say not to bring makeup, but if you think you'll feel better having it, do. My grandparents came, so I got up and showered, put on a flowy cotton dress, dried my hair (hair dryer!!!!!), and put on makeup. I felt human at least, even if I still felt like a mummy-wrapped hippo.

You can bring a little outfit for the baby to wear home, if you want, although I honestly hated bothering him to put it on him, just for nobody to see him wear it.

Otherwise, you know, it was just essentials. Just keep it simple. They'll give you enough supplies to get home and get started as far as pads, diapers, wipes, & creams go, and ask for extra too.

It also helps to make a list of what you brought so you can check it off when you leave. I left my phone charger in the room and had to send my dad by to get it.

  • I don't think I have anything to add to the above ... make sure you take lip gloss or something because your lips can dry out.  I also liked having the Boppy pillow with me.  You may want to take your nursing bras/tanks too.

  • I overpacked... The one thing I was glad I had was the nursing tanks. I put one on as soon as I was moved to the postpartum floor. I wore the gown for the next 20 hours and then changed into jeans. I knew I was going home soon, that is why I put my jeans on.

I packed a labor bag and a postpartum bag. If you will not be laboring/delivering/recovering in the same room, then I recommend two bags. It was nice to have what I wanted/DH wanted in L&D.

Haha I know we hate "this" ing, but I could have written this post, except for laboring in a tub!  I loved having my boppy there...I used it for nursing, holding Jamie and for my own sleeping at night.  I also wore the same clothes home that I wore there....I didn't need the PJ's or change of clothes that I packed.  Flip flops and/or slippers are a must have.

  • I didn't take much this time. I loved having my own towels from home and took nursing tanks and yoga pants to wear.. I actually never even put a hospital gown on this time. I also loved having my boppy. I got up and showered and put on makeup both mornings too, it made me feel more human.

  • I hardly ever post but I'll throw in my two cents.  It's a great question...after reading some of these responses I wish I would've asked.  I definitely wish I had a nursing bra or a sleep bra to keep the girls in place.  I brought my favorite lotion and shower gel.  It really made me feel a lot more comfortable.  I also brought some lollipops since they won't let you eat or drink anything.  I brought a couple of PJs and a comfy set of lounge pants and shirt.

It may be silly but I think I'm going to buy my own hospital gown for next time.  I just felt really uncomfortable in theirs.  I think if I had a "pretty" one it would make me feel a little better...and better for pictures. :-) I brought make-up but didn't bother with it.  After 24 hrs of labor, I figured what's the point?

Definitely bring your baby book if you have something you want the footprints put on.  I had my MIL run out and buy us one.
