Favorite beach in Maine?

Hi ladies,

I usually post on The Bump but I was referred over here. DH and I are planning a trip at the end of the month. We want to go to a beach in Maine (we are from Upstate NY) but we are undecided about where to go. We went to Old Orchard Beach last year and DH wants to go back, but I'm trying to convince him that there are other (nicer?) towns/beaches to see. (He is a creature of habit). I am looking at Ogunquit, York & Wells.

Can anyone over some insight onto which beach towns you prefer? We have a 2 year old so we are looking for family friendly, affordable, nice beach & plenty to do. We'll be there maybe 5 days, and I don't want to get bored. We want to swim, so we aren't looking to go too far north. (We've been to OOB quite a few times & that water temp, although cold, is do-able for us).

We also plan to spend one day in Portland, so it would be nice if it was close-ish, but that's not a necessity.  (Also, if you want to recommend any family friendly must-sees in Portland that would be great).

Thanks ladies!

Re: Favorite beach in Maine?

  • My favorites are Kennebunks. There is the large beach, Gooches that is great to walk etc. and right next to that is Mother's Beach. That's a great beach for little ones because the rocks on either side of it kind of kept the ocean calmer there. There is also a playground right on the beach, sidewalks to walk all the way up all three beaches etc. You do need a parking pass, but if you stay at a hotel you can get one from them.  It's only 25 minutes South of Portland and near OOB , York, etc. if you wanted to take a drive.
  • I responded on the other post, but wanted to mention if you end up at Ft. Williams/Portland Headlight in Cape Elizabeth, be sure to bring some kites.  There is always great wind there.  We tried to fly some yesterday, but unfortunately they were crappy quality and broke in the first 2 minutes there.  I just bought some better ones today so next time we will hopefully have better luck :)  There is a really nice playground there and lots of open spaces to walk and play ball.

  • Crescent Beach in Cape Elizabeth is great and has facilities. My personal fav is Higgins Beach in Scarborough, but it is not a public beach, so there are no bathrooms. But it's wicked nice! Both close enough so you could stay in portland

Love Higgins!! Crescent isn't bad, either.

Fort Williams is pretty much my favorite place in the world, but not for swimming :)

  • Ogunquit is my fav. It's crowded, but has the nicest sand and there are two sides, the waves and the river side.

  • I love Scarborough beach the best. It's out of the way and not touristy at all. It's not part of a "beach town", but there is so much to do in Portland anyways. Really so many of the towns and beaches in Maine are so close by ( at least in Southern Maine) you could definitely check out a few beaches and towns during one vacation. :)
  • I hate Old Orchard and refuse to go there-it's dirty, imo.  Husband and I usually go to Ogunquit.  Higgin's beach in Scarborough is nice too.
