BC with no co-pay!

http://www.wfaa.com/news/health/Birth-control-covered-by-insurance-with-no-copays-126526238.html

Apparently today, it was ruled that BC should be covered under preventative care and require no co-pay.

I think it's pretty cool...

Re: BC with no co-pay!

  • Yay! I have always thought it would make sense to cover this cost up front than the cost of a pregnancy.

Exactly! I'm sure it will reduce welfare expenses too.

  • Yay, I hope it includes mine.  I pay $70 a month.
  • I have mirena so it won't effect me for awhile.
  • I have reservations about this in general.... but I can see the benefit.  It doesn't start for 2 more years? Boo.

But it said that insurance companies may opt to start it earlier.

I got excited about this until I read 2013.

Irresponsible people will always be irresponsible. Period.

You can go to Planned Parenthood now and get BC for free. Or, use a condom. Those are relatively cheap.

I have the mirena.  I have had it for 4 years.  Did you notice any significant changes in yourself when you had it put in?

Si.    Plus, it is my understanding you can also get it for $4 at Walmart.

I'm guessing here, but I would think making it available over the counter would help more-so than making it free or requiring a clinic.  I guess a host of other issues would occur then, though, like some people would never get their annuals.

ITA but from a solely selfish point of view I am excited.  I dont use planned parenthood because I know they only have so many resources and I feel like I should pay for my own and leave the assistance to someone really in need.  I only pay about 60 every 3 months but still that is extra money I can put toward something else considering I will likely be on bc for another 5-10 years.

Agreed. I use generic and it's less than $4. So, this isn't super exciting for me.

I've had it for about the same amount of time you have. Its hard to say if the changes (depression/anxiety/decreased sex drive/weight gain)  I've noticed were due to the Mirena or that at the same time my mom was diagnosed & passed away from ovarian cancer. DH & I think that my reaction to the situation with my mom was intensified by even the small amount of hormones in Mirena. Have you had any side effects?

I really want to try NFP, but want to wait until DH & I have stable jobs and it would be ok if we got pregnant w/o meaning to.

Those are the same exact symptoms I have!!  Weight gain has gotten a lot worse over the last year, even though I haven't changed anything.  I haven't had any major life altering changes (well, besides getting married), but the other stuff is baaaad.

I thought that I was just broken!

I'm kinda glad to hear that it is probably the Mirena causing these symptoms. If I had it removed (not looking forward to that) maybe I could get off Wellbutrin too! So much going on right now though, its no wonder I'm feeling overwhelmed.

I am completely butting in about something that may not even help you out but when I was talking to my dr about switching to something other than the pill, we got to talking about the sex drive.  She said key things for that is making sure you get 8 hours of sleep a night and if you are depressed that plays into it as well.  Then you have to deal with the weight gain and so you aren't feeling that great about yourselves.  I'm not sure about the anxiety that you pointed out, though.  But the others play a role in your sex drive.

Also butting in here... I've been doing this for 5 months now, and really love it.  I was on various kinds of BCP before, and my main complaint was zero want-to.  That's considerably better now.  Also, I tend to turn red a lot (derm told me it was pre-rosacea) and that is also way better, although I'm still trying to figure out that connection.  I have been dealing with some acne since going off the pills, but it's manageable, and we're using a backup method due to some job instability like you mentioned.  I'd say, if you're curious and your H is on board, read up on it and give it a try.  If you have specific questions - I'm definitely no expert, but I'm willing to talk about it so you can PM me.

Welp, guilty on all accounts for me.  My anxiety isn't too terrible... more-so over things that *could* happen to Cadence.  That's what freaks me out the worst.  The rest is awful.  I'm lucky Andrew loves me.

Don't worry about butting in, your comments make a lot of sense! The worst part is that once 1 thing happens then it kind of snowballs (ie: depressed = weight gain = anxiety about looks = lower drive etc)

  • Please tell me what NFP is.  :)

Also, I've been told by my doctor that women tend to experience symptoms of anxiety when their hormones change.  So, changing BCP (or methods), having a baby or getting off BCP altogether.

I've been off of BCP for a couple of years now and I still have symptoms of anxiety.

NFP= Natural Family Planning.  I think you chart your temps to figure things out but I haven't done this.  It tells you when not to have sex when you don't want to get PG but it will also tell you when to have it if you are trying to get PG.

  • Namasteak, yes, I read TCOYF.  If he's game, I say give it a try - especially with backup, you shouldn't have to worry!
  • So I know you all aren't worried about this right now, but this also covers hospital grade breast pumps with no co-pay. This is kind of cool as they tend to be expensive even with insurance.

I have been following natural family planning signs to get pregnant and it has really gotten me in tune with my body. I will likely go back to NFP once I get my post-baby period back because we would like to have a sibling soon after the first, so an IUD isn't really a good option and hormonal BCP aren't good for breast feeding.

There are some girls who have been using NFP on the Getting Pregnant board to avoid with much success for years.

DH and I have used NFP for almost a year now with success.  Hopefully that will translate to a quicker time conceiving when we try to.  Who knows though.  I will say that there are many methods for NFP, and we use the Billings which is just observation of your cycle.  There is no having to take your temperature daily, etc.  It is pretty simple if you know what you are looking for. (and have a body that gives clear signs)
