Black tie wedding attire?

We have a black tie wedding in Dallas at the end of September, and I can't decide what to wear - so I'm hoping you local ladies might be able to help. DH will be in a tux. Do I need to wear a long gown, or would a cocktail dress be more appropriate?

Re: Black tie wedding attire?

  • Technically either a dressy cocktail dress or a floor length gown is appropriate.  But to me, "black tie" means a long formal gown so if I already had one (which I do), I would wear that.  If I had to go buy something to wear, then price and the ability to wear the dress again would certainly guide my decision.
  • Ditto Stephie, but if you don't have anything already and have to buy something, I would probably buy a dressy cocktail dress.  Personally, I would get more use out of a cocktail dress, than I would a long formal gown.

ETA: It is usually still pretty toasty here in September.

Also, I love the owl in your siggy (and the beautiful baby, of course).  I told DH this weekend that if we have a baby boy, I want to do an owl themed nursery.  He said that I could do it for a girl, too, and you have just proven him correct.  :)

  • I would get a dressy cocktail dress that I would wear again and get some great jewelry to go with it.
  • Cocktail dress all the way.

Ditto! Or you can see if you can borrow one from someone you know.
