thinking ahead ... ornaments!

i'm trying to stay ahead of the ball this year and am trying to think of some fun crafts for my boys this Christmas season. I'm wondering how to go about making homemade clay ornaments ... I'm no "ar-teest" but I think it could be fun!

Anyone know of any good tutorials/instructions?

  • The only thing I would wonder with clay is if it would break when dropped or

    deteriorate over time/during storage.

  • What about using salt dough?

I've used this before and it works really well!

  • You can always go to your local Ceramic studio and paint your own ornaments and even some decoration for that matter. And if you and your sons use glazes you ornaments will last a long time and the colors should not fade over time... Hope this helps.

  • Use cookie cutters.  We are going to do gingerbread men/women using the applesauce/cinnomon recipe (equal parts).

They smell nice, look just like gingerbread men and are easy to make.

This is a great idea! My grandmother did this many years ago and we still have everything she made.

  • I don't know about clay but my family has made homemade ornaments out of Mason Jar lids. We would cut out pictures to fit in the lid and then tie a ribbon through (this is how it hangs on the tree) then back it with felt. It is fun and easy and every Christmas it is fun to look the old pictures.
  • I would recommend doing the cinnamon/applesauce idea previously stated.  Easy to do and smells so good!
