Help with $2,700 flight to NZ??
Any very savvy travelers here?? I'm trying to get to New Zealand in January and a round trip flight out of Syracuse or Binghamton is $2,700. I looked at flights out of Toronto, LaGuardia, and Newwark, too. Anyone have insiders tips on a better deal? It's gone up $200 since I looked about a month ago!
TIA!
Re: Help with $2,700 flight to NZ??
Hey! I haven't posted on here much lately, but I went to NZ in January this year and will be going again at the same time as you are. Last time I flew US Air/Air NZ. This time I'm flying Quantas all the way.
I think my flight last time (US Air/Air NZ) was around $2200. I'm not sure what it is this time because it's for work and we have a group rate (I'm taking my class).
That's the expensive time to go, since it's NZ summer AND the holiday season.
NZ is AMAZING!! Have you been before?
ETA: Where are you flying into? That can make a big difference too. The smaller the airport, the more expensive it is. If you're going to the north island it's really not too bad to fly into Auckland, Rotarua, or Wellington (depending on where you're going) and rent a car from there. But, for example, if you try to fly into Taupo, it will be much more expensive because the airport is smaller, and that's the tourist trap area.
For the south island, your best bets would be Christchurch or Queenstown, but that island is much larger and isn't as conducive to just renting a car if you need to go a long way. It's amazingly gorgeous though - if you don't mind a few days of driving, it's an incredible way to see everything!
2010 Highlights
9/26 Adirondack Marathon 5:11:37 (major knee pain, but hey, I finished!)
2011 Races and Results
5/29 Buffalo Marathon (5:25 - not pretty, just trying not to get heatstroke!)
9/25 Adirondack Marathon (take 2!)
One of these days I'll have a good marathon!
I actually think that's probably about right for this time of year. I've had many friends fly to Australia and it seems to cost them between $2,000-$2,500. Even my upcoming trip to Europe was going to be $1,900 if I went coach.
Kayak.com searches all the other sites (except Southwest, which you wouldn't be flying anyway) so I usually start there and then I book directly with the airlines.
Oh and according to every travel advice article I've ever read, Tuesday is the best day of the week to purchase flights. So perhaps check again tomorrow to see if it drops at all.
Good luck!
Ahh, thanks for the advice!! Good point about it being their summer.
The last time I went was about 10 years ago in July and my flight was around $1500 RT and I flew from SYR to LAX to Auckland. This time I'm heading to the south island and I'll be living in Dunedin for three years (at least that's the plan).
A friend suggested I look into flights out of London, so that was going to be my next idea until Two mentioned the coach flight to the EU.
Hmm... Guess it was just sticker shock and I'll have to cough up the dough!
Wait, you're going to be living there? So this is for a one way ticket? If you only need one way to London I'd definitely check that. You should be able to at least JFK to Heathrow fairly reasonably.
Jealous!
I went in January to start my Ph.D. (my school and my field sites are there, but I'm working from the states), and I spent the entire time trying to figure out how to convince my H to move there.
I'll win that one someday...
