Where would you live if...

We are looking into moving to Houston again...(I am trying to not get my hopes up again, last time it did not work, still in San Antonio).  DH will be working right off the beltway, next to the Race Track.  My dream job would be working in the Med Center, Texas Childrens or Memorial Hermann.  So what area or subdivisions should we look in?  I am looking for a family friendly neighborhood, we have a 1 year old.  I do not mind computing, DH may though....Thanks!!

Re: Where would you live if...

  • Oak Forest, Spring Branch, or all the way out in Cypress.

  • We live in Cypress and love it out here! From our house it would take maybe 20 minutes to get to the race track without traffic. My DH worked down in the med center for a little while and it would take him about 45 minutes to an hour to get to that side of town in traffic (he had to leave right before 6 to make it there about 15 minutes before 7). It all depends on what time you would have to be at work and what time you would get off. The traffic on 290 can be bad at times.
  • As far as being close to the race track.  I'd recommend Tomball or between Tomball and Willowbrook.  That won't put you close to the Med Ctr but probably about the same distance to the Med Ctr from Cypress as it is from Tomball.

  • We live in Jersey Village - not far from your DHs location at all.  DH works in the Med Center and takes a van pool to work.  If you're working odd hours (like shift work) the drive is very easy.  For 8-5, he leaves the house at 6:30 to go to the Park & Ride, gets to work about 7:30 and then gets home about 6:15 after picking up DS from daycare.
  • I live exactly where I want to live- the Heights. Its very central, super family oriented and a reverse commute for most places outside of downtown. It's about 10-12 minutes to the med center. You can get a little more for your money in Oak Forest, Garden Oaks, Shepherd Park Plaza or Candlelight Estates but all have the same strong sense of community, easy commute and are very family friendly.

  • are you talking about the horse track?
  • We live in Humble and love it. I would look at Fall Creek which is right off the beltway and the elementary school is amazing.

Summerwood is another option. It is about a mile from the beltway.

  • Even saying that a commute is OK, no way would I recommend Cypress to the Med Center.  They just broke ground on overhauling the 290/610 interchange.  That is going to be a mess.

Just an added tidbit: a lawyer friend told me recently that they are about to start some MASSIVE construction (think the years of I-10 horror) on 290 in the next couple years.  Right now they are going through demolition litigation, but the company that has been contracted to handle that has been contracted for the next 7-10 years.  Makes me re-think wanting to live anywhere near 290.

  • I love the Heights, especially having a young baby.  We will probably move to a larger home in a different neighborhood in 4 or 5 years but for now it's perfect.  If he wants to avoid a commute, I think Tomball is close.
  • sweet mary.  i'm with anyone saying cypress to the med center is a hellacious commute.  i used to do that, and it was a long ride on the commuter bus (plus i had to switch buses once to and from-- i don't know if that's changed).

i he's going to be working near the horse track, then he will probably have the simpler commute, in all honesty.  unless you work odd shifts, especially with a small child who might need to be picked up in a timely manner, cypress would not be my pick.  i would rather live somewhere more proximal to med center and have HIM do the commuting.  from kingwood/the 59 area, he could easily commute via BW8 and you via 59.

  • I'm not the best with directions and I live on the Southwest side, so I'm definitely not the expert.  But, could you live somewhere off the beltway or somewhere between the Race Track and the new TCH West Campus?

Are you a nurse?  What kind of job are you looking for?  If you want TCH, I have connections to the med center and West Campus.  Lately it about who you know to get a job there.

Agree!  Heights is wonderful!  I live on the other side of 610 near Oak Forest in Candlelight and I LOVE it!
