Opinions, please!

We are painting the exterior of our house before it goes on the market. If the weather is nice, we'll do it this weekend.

Our house is an 1100sq ft ranch that it currently robin's egg blue with white trim and a black roof. We're talking about going a more neutral blue, gray or beige.

I *think* you're supposed to use light colors for smaller houses. And I am pretty sure you should choose cool colors for a black roof.

Here is our house (the trim is blue in this picture because it's when we first bought the house, but have since painted it white.) Sorry, I can't find a picture of the front! Haha

So what color do you ladies think we should choose? Any suggestions/recommendations/thoughts/opinions?

Re: Opinions, please!

  • I have a white ranch about that size with a dark gray roof. I think sticking with lighter colors sounds nice. Like maybe light gray with white trim. I don't know what color houses are supposed to be... I tend to lean toward neutral colors (especially grays) and that's probably what I would go for.

You have a beautiful back yard, by the way.

  • I think a light gray would be lovely. But I'm lately drawn to darkish blues on house exteriors. I so so so want that on my house someday...

  • I agree with pp, something light like a gray or blue-gray would be nice. GL!

  • Another vote for light gray!
  • Thanks, ladies! I think light gray sounds good, too. And it's what we were leaning towards anyway because we think it'll cover the current color well.

What color should we do the front door? Navy? And shutters? That's where I get stuck.

Thanks! That's not even the good view! Haha
  • Front door could be anything you want it to be. Peacock would add a nice punch of color. Or red. You could go boring with black if you wanted to play it safe.

  • This is our color scheme:

English wedgewood siding, midnight blue shutters (HD), white trim and doors.

  • Navy sounds nice for the front door and even the shuttters.

  • I think a light gray would be perfect. You should do midnight blue door and shutters....or both in red too. Crisp white trim. I think that would look awesome!

PS. Your back yard is awesome...I wish DH and I could afford your house - we want to buy in the next year or two probably.

  • MrsC, I love your color scheme! If we weren't sticking with light colors, I would definitely do a darker blue like that.

I think we'll stick with navy door and shutters. I love red doors, but since we're selling, we need to play it safe.

LBurkey, I love my house, and my yard, but it isn't too reasonable for raising a family. Our road has no sidewalk, it's only 2 bedrooms, and the interior is entirely open concept with exposed brick and hardwood floors throughout. So it's impossible to put up baby gates or to do much baby-proofing. But before kids, it was the perfect house lol

  • I like MrsC's house! It's super!

I love red doors, but since you are selling, I agree, play it safe and go with navy.

Yea that totally makes sense. I've been just browsing houses online to get an idea of what sort of house we can get in our price range...unfortunately it's not much. Yet another reason why we want to move back south - so much more house for your dollar!
