Marathons and Ironmans

So it seems like a few of you are into long distance running... which is SOooooo awesome!!!

I ran the Disney Marathon my senior year of high school (gulp... 10 years ago).  Don't remember my time, but I had an absolute blast!  I also ran several 1/2 marathons, by far my favorite distance race.  I have continued running over the past 10 years, mostly because the Marine Corps made me, lol... but I haven't really run competitively, race-wise at least.  I've been wanting to get back into it.

Hubby finally caved in and agreed to run the Country Music Marathon in Nashville with me next April (provided that I am not big, fat and pregnant by then).  Wink

So... who out here in CNY Nest land runs?  What was your favorite race?  Least fav?  Best time?  Do you prefer to run w/ a group, partner or solo?  Do you train w/ a group or on your own?

Personally, I'm not totally serious about the whole training thing and I don't stick to a certain regimen.  I run when I want to, Crossfit when I don't... and occasionally just totally slack off and enjoy a glass of wine instead.

Re: Marathons and Ironmans

  • I ran my first and only marathon about 6 years ago, and haven't really run regularly since. I am training right now for a 7-miler on labor day weekend, and a (very) long term goal is to run the NYC marathon- I've always wanted to run that.

I'm really intrigued by Crossfit since I used to love the bootcamp classes at my old gym but the prices don't work for our budget right now.

  • Labbie- check out www.crossfit.com

I get all of my workouts from their website and basically just torture myself.  I don't have any of the olympic style lifting equipment, so if the WOD (workout of the day) involves something that I am not equipped for, I just substitute or find an older WOD that I can do.

My friend's husband owns Crossfit Dewitt, but I have never been.  I can get a pretty good workout on my own and, while motivation from others helps, I can't really afford a formal membership either.  Their website is pretty awesome though and keeps me pumped enough.

  • I puffy heart triathlons!  I started with the sprint distances about 4 years ago and last summer I did Ironman Lake Placid (14 hours and 28 minutes, not pro-worthy!).  I did the Philly marathon and Wineglass marathon.  I enjoy that distance but my body doesn't.  I developed a hernia during Ironman training and had it surgically fixed last December (not the easy way, I have a nice 4 inch scar across my groin from the sports hernia-hope no one ever has to deal with one, ugh!).  I did the 148 mile Brewery to Brewery ride in June.  It's from Harpoon in Boston to Harpoon in Vermont.  I had a BLAST! Unfortunatly, I didn't make the 16mph average, so I can't do it next year.

I see there's an Empire marathon in Syracuse in October.  I'd love to do it but need to save $$.

Binghamton had it's first half marathon this past May.  I heard really good reviews about it (because it's FLAT!).

  • I find it amusing that people pay to torture their bodies with all this running, biking, swimming, whatnot.  You couldn't pay ME enough to do that lol.  Long distance running is not for me.  More power to you if you like it since it's good exercise.
  • Ha, I did Couch 25K last year, and then my arch in my foot was always hurting. I would like to run as it is one more option for a workout, but I need to figure out my foot issue. I would love to buy a bike though.

  • I love marathoning!  I did my first one last September - the Adirondack Marathon at Schroon Lake.  It was incredible.  My second was this May in Buffalo.  I'll be running my third (Schroon again because it's fun) in September.

I'm just starting to get into tris now and plan do do several olympics and a half iron next summer, and then the Lake Placid Ironman in 2013 (the day before my 30th birthday).

If anybody's in the Saratoga area and is looking for a training buddy, let me know!
