Vent: Cabin fever from this heat. Rawrr!
I think we're all getting a little stir crazy in my house from the non-stop heat. There just isn't much to do when it's THIS hot outside. Normally after work I would run with LJ but I can't even do that because it's so damn warm!
I feel like we're on lockdown besides going to daycare, the grocery store, or work. No park, no zoo, no long walks... I am one of those people who NEEDS to be outside.
Sorry, I just need ONE normal temperature day. Just one. Even 80 degrees. I'll take EIGHTY degrees. Then we can go back to heat wave.
Whiny vent over.

Phew, glad I'm not alone ladies!
Shea - thanks for the suggestions. He's not walking yet though so most places where we go he's either in a cart or stroller... which isn't too much fun for him
Where is this aquatic center with the cheap after 5 entry? Maybe we'll give that a try. Is it packed? He's a big dude but I worry about him getting steam rolled by some crazy kids....
ETA - also, is it shaded (in any places)? I don't think I'd take him if it was in direct sun. Because I'm a helicopter parent, haha.

I can answer!
The NW aquatic center is on 50th just a couple blocks north of douglas, 2 dollars after 5 monday-thrusday. It hasnt been that crowded at all (weve never gone before 5 on a weeknight so thats all I can speak to) and there is a canopy in the water for our fair skinned kiddos. L's a walker but dont let the fact that LJ isnt stop you. L still loves to sit and splash, and if there happens to be some kids being rude I firmly (but polietly) ask them to do it somewhere else.

I agree, it totally sucks. It is *almost* as bad as winter in terms of being cooped up.
Re mall play places - I bet you'll do them at some point. I was more adamantly against them than ANYONE. Like literally had bad dreams about them and wanted to take a bath in purell after just looking at them. We eventually cracked w/ G was about 2 and haven't looked back. I've never been to merle hay, but between the west ones, I rec getting your feet wet at VWM sometime when it isn't busy (during the day during the week). That one is better for little kids anyway. We still refuse to go on the weekends, too busy and too gross. I imagine it isn't terrible during the evenings during the week, and would be a nice escape.
Re the NW aquatic center - is this the clive one, urbandale? neither? how have i never heard of this? and i'm a little confused, how is it on 50th when it is north of douglas? what is the non-WDM equivalent of this street? It sounds like a great idea!
Jaime, I thought the same thing, where is this and why have I never heard of it? Turns out it is near 50th street in Des Moines, not the west suburbs. The streets go up to about 73rd street and then start over with West Des Moines numbering south of University so there is also the 50th street in West Des Moines where Lowes and the Clive Aquatic Center are. The NW Aquatic Center is between Douglas and Aurora in the Des Moines/north Beaverdale area, kind of by Hoover high school. If you google it, you'll find the exact address.
Is it for the germs or the rowdy kids? If it's just the kids.. try out VWM. People often use the MHM one as an unsupervised babysitter for their kids while they shop and JC is just insane all the time, but the one at VWM is usually pretty manageable.
We've been taking Nicholas outside to play around 8:30 or 9, right before it gets dark. He gets his fresh air and we don't sweat a gallon. That's one nice thing about having a kid with a later sleep pattern.
lol!
We play outside when our yard is the shadiest and it's not too bad. We also have the hose running!
Thanks for the recs on VWM, ladies. Like I said maybe I can warm him up to it in a few years. Quite frankly, I'm okay with waiting. But I'm guessing the older he gets, the harder it is going to be when he sees kids playing in there each time we pass by
For the germs. I believe Drew's exact words were, "It is a cesspool of nastiness."
That is awesome that you can take Nicholas out later! Lucas hits the tub around 7 and is down shortly after... it's unbelievable how hot it still is in the early evenings!

oooh you know what? That reminds me, I should invest in one of those 'kiddie sprinklers'. The kind that attach to the hose but don't spray to high/hard. Any suggestions?

I got one for my nephew from Target. I'll see if I can find a link! They LOVE it...didn't realize that they actually had it last year and it had broken which was apparently heart breaking for them!
Hey thanks, Sam! I can't wait to see a link!

I couldn't find it on the Target site but this is what it is...

Wanna say it was like $12? But my nephew is 2 this year and last year he loved it too.
That looks really fun! And it would pull double duty to water my sad, sad lawn... haha!
Thank you!

mollyjean - as far as the sprinkler goes, my friend clued me into a great little one you can buy at lowes for like $2.50 - it is this little ring that comes in pink, green or blue and shoots a gentle ring of water. It is awesome for little kids! We have the one that smtaylor mentioned, and gretta likes it, but it is too much for ingrid. the little "fun ring" is perfect for younger ones, low to the ground so they won't trip - and cheap! not to mention it appears indistructable.
and i think your husband is right in terms of the play center. it all becomes MUCH more manageable to stomach once your kiddo stops putting everything in their mouth. we took G after she was able to be trusted to keep her hands and all other items well away from her mouth. that way she could play and we could sanitize the hell out of her and hopefully avoid all illness. we don't go when it is really busy and there would be more airborne germs. poor ingrid just gets exposed to more b/c we can't isolate G to keep them both healthy. i guess it will just improve her immune system??
Awesome! That sounds like a good fit for my little guy. Maybe when he's a bit more mobile the larger/longer sprinkler will be an upgrade. I like that idea and the price too
Thank you!!
