Re: What do you think of this sewing machine for a beginner?

  • My daughter has the first one, and it seems to be a pretty good machine for the price, and for being a Singer....they really are not great machines anymore.   I haven't used it much, and it is kind of noisy, but it was much better than the cheapo Walmart Brother machine that we bought as an extra machine.

I think kkh has one that she bought when she was making the cooling collars for the fundraiser and her machine was in the shop.

My first sewing machine was the cheapo Brother from Wal-Mart.  It was good to learn on and easy to use. When I upgraded a couple of years ago, I went to the Brother XL-2600i, which retails for around $90. I love it.  It would definitely be a good machine for a beginner.

I'd hate to spend a few hundred dollars on a sewing machine and then find out I don't like to sew.

  • I would not recommend a Singer machine. Between my family, we've had 3 machines that were absolute duds.

I bought a Brother a few months ago, and nothing wrong yet.

  • I'd get the Brother machine. I have the model below that one and I love it.

I found a refurb version on overstock of the 2600i for $70  Do you think a reburbished machine would be fine?

  • I have a Singer and haven't had any problems with it yet. I've only started heavily using it less than a month ago though.

  • Thanks.  I might get the Brother soon.  I'm so indecisive about it right now.

Honestly, it's only $15 more for a new one at Wal-Mart with free shipping to either your home or site-to-store, so I'd likely choose to purchase a new one. I'm not familiar with Overstock, their return policy, or what kind of warranty a refurbished machine would come with.

ha! thanks.  I read your first post wrong, thinking the xl 2600i was $90 MORE than your first machine not just $90. I would agree with your assessment of buying it new.

  • I know that some Brothers are decent machines, but I would not recommend the lower end ones...especially not to a beginner.  They are notorious for timing and tension issues, and it is frustrating.   I am a very experienced seamstress, and I was beyond frustrated.   I couldn't imagine a beginner even wanting to sew on a machine that frustrating....I would guess they would quit.

Also, the low end machines are meant to be disposable.  They get a problem and you find out that it costs around the same amount to fix it as to get a new machine, so you get a new machine and upgrade.....it's how they get you.

  • I think I am going to get the $200 Brother I posted.  I can get it with a coupon for $33/month for the next 5 months so if I don't like it in a month, I can return it.
  • I have a refurb Brother via Overstock. I've had it for 18 months or so, use it pretty often and don't have an issue with it at all. It's an SE 350 so IDK.
