Hand Foot and Mouth Disease

C has HFMD.  The fever started Saturday afternoon and now she has the sores.  The pediatrician said it is likely G will get it because it is so contagious.  His bday is Saturday and we are only have a family party.  It will include a toddler and a baby.  Foolishly we have already started talking about them coming.  Right now I am crossing my fingers he doesn't get it.  The party will go on, but his little cousins might not be able to make it.  Has anyone with two kids had one get it and the other not?  C loves to snatch her brother's cups and sometimes he will payback by drinking out of hers so the germs have already been shared.

Re: Hand Foot and Mouth Disease

  • We just got over both kids having Hand, Foot and Mouth last week at our house.  DS is on Day 9 of still showing minimal symptoms (lethargic) but his fever and rash are gone.

DS got HF&M first - and DD showed symptoms within 48 hours of his onset of the virus.  In all that I read - it appears to be very contagiuos especially during the first week of the illness.

Not to be negative - and I would not normally exert my opinion like this - but what we just went through at my house was terrible.  Thus being said - I would not be hosting a party should my children be infected with HF&M.  In my research I learned that most of the time adults are actually the "carriers" of the virus - but show no symptoms due to the antibodies they've developed over the course of their life.  So, even though no children will be present at the party - you could still run the risk of infecting others through the adults who will be present.  Just my 2 cents :)

  • Cameron had it and Maya never got it.  The doc said there are many strains of it and she may have already built an immunity to the one he had.  I hope she's better soon and G doesn't catch it!
