Closet Air Freshener

My closet seems to have a stale smell. It's hard to describe because it does not smell bad or anything, but definitely seems like it needs something to freshen the air. I am not big on can sprays, but something more natural. Any ideas?

Re: Closet Air Freshener

  • Our house is old (1850s).  Two closets in rooms without air-conditioning develop a stale smell every hot summer.   I empty the closets and wipe them down with a white vinegar solution.  I set a fan in each closet and let the fan run overnight.  I then reload the closet with cedar hangers and the clothes for storage.   It lasts for a year.

  • Bath & Body Works has a new item called Scent Portables. I keep one in my closet (and car).

  • I know this sounds ridiculous but I've actually used a Yankee Candle car freshener (normally in the Clean Cotton scent but I think they also have a Linen scent) for this in the past.  I just would tuck it in the far corner of the closet (so not up against my clothes) and it wouldn't be too overpowering.
I like the cedar block idea.

  • I definitely gotta try this! :)
  • Tide makes something for closets.  There are like 6 little round gel "packets" in a package.  I just hang one packet over a hanger and place in each closet.  I have had 1 in each closet for apx. 1 year and I can still smell them.  It just smells like fresh Tide.  I don't typically like non-natural things but I like these.  They don't add a smell to my clothes that isn't already there.
