Blue Cross Blue Shield

Anyone use them? I have H on my health insurance through work, but his monthly premium has just gone sky-high in the last couple of years. I literally get less money in my paycheck now than I did two years ago.

When our option period comes around, I would like to maybe switch him to another coverage, if possible, so I don't feel like I'm crunching numbers all the time (we don't combine our finances).

He, of course, is not very open to the idea, saying that it might not be "good coverage." Because mine is just sooooooo amazing. I told him to have an open mind. I think he just doesn't want to pay for it!

Re: Blue Cross Blue Shield

  • We have a family policy (Health Check Select) through BCBS.  I could go with a cheaper plan, but I enjoy not having to be concerned with making sure my doctor is in network. We pay $15 co-pays & prescription coverage is decent.  If there are any specifics you want, let me know.

I know that they have two other types of plans (Health Check Basic and an HMO type of plan) that would be relatively inexpensive. :)  My premium unfortunately includes maternity so it's sky high at the moment.

  • DH just bought this last month (he's not eligable for insurance through his new job for the next 2 months and my policy is free for me, but ungodly expensive to add him to.) I think he bought a mid-priced policy (about $110/month) and, while the coverage isn't fabulous, it's not terrible, either. At least we wouldn't go bankrupt if he should need surgery or something in the next few months.
  • We are insured through H's work so I have no idea what it costs, but our family has BCBS. I really like it. It's widely accepted and we've never had any problems with it. Our coverage is really good too (small copays, reasonable deductibles).
  • Just know that there are TONS of BCBS options for policies (I have one, too), so investigate what he's getting specifically. Some are wonderful, but some are terrible.
  • Yes, he's concerned that he would only get 80/20 if he had to have some kind of major medical procedure, and I guess with mine you only pay a max of $2,500 out of pocket? I'm not sure he's right about that, though. I need to get all the literature for mine so we can compare side-to-side.

  • I have BCBS through OSU and I really like it. It is the best insurance I have ever had. OSU pays our premiums but I do know you can get it for a really good price each month.

This.  Kevin and I both have BCBS and our plans differ drastically.  90-100% of anything and everything is covered for me, whereas it seems he might as well not even have coverage with the amount of out of pocket costs for any doctor visit/procedure.

  • We have BCBS through our work. Honestly, we have had other insurance policies in the past and I think this one has been the best so far. Our copays and deductibles are really reasonable and almost every doctor in the area is covered so I don't have to worry about paying out of pocket.

I will say this the past 2 years we have had a lot happen where we had to use our insurance for more than just regular check ups and perscriptions. Between having a baby (c-section), another surgery, and multiple ER vists I was releventaly surprised by much our insurance covered and how little we had to pay.

  • We also hve BCBS through H's work. Excellent. My only complaint is that co-pays for non-generic prescriptions is absurdly high, and unfortunately all of my prescriptions don't have a generic option. Which blows.

  • We had BCBS for two years through our work policies. We had an 80/20 policy and it sucked.  I had to have several tests and a surgery done during that time and we paid an arm and a leg.  Plus there was zero infertility coverage.  We have since switched to another carrier and have had much better coverage.
