Moms: how did you pick a pedi?

I got tons of paperwork at the last appt, including a form to fill out about our pediatrician.

I'm thinking of going with the practice that is RIGHT around the corner from us - it looks really good from their website - http://www.dowdmed.com (if you're curious), and they do prenatal sessions where you can meet them. What questions should I ask?

Re: Moms: how did you pick a pedi?

  • we picked based on recommendations of friends - never met with him prior to having Josh.  We have had really good luck with him and have liked him 99% of the time.

  • We met with the one my OB recommended, who also happened to be the assistant chair of the Pediatrics department at the hospital I delivered. Some questions we asked were if they had weekend hours for sick visits, if they had seperate waiting rooms for sick and well patients, if we could schedule same-day sick appointments, if they had an on-call number.... those are all I can remember. We LOVE Eli's pedi!

That is good to know! From the website for the local practice, the answer is yes to all these things...they even have Sat, Sun and Holiday appts for urgent care...and we can literally walk there (not that we probably would, but y'know, it's nice that it is that close).

  • We got a list of affiliated docs from the hospital.  We picked one that was close to our house and B's work, and that had more than 1 doctor and night/weekend hours.  I figured that if we hated them we could switch.

Since the one doctor was the first person who told me P was going to make it without significant lasting health problems (6 hours after he was born), I fell in love with him :)

They do offer nights to go in and meet the staff, and will make appointments for parents to meet the doctors and ask questions, but I didn't bother.

If I did ask questions, I would make sure they are compatible with our parenting style (we leaned to AP especially in the beginning).

  • I like our Pedi, we asked some friends where they went and I did research of nearby pedi offices through our insurance provider. I then called the offices to find out about new patient meetings. I think I called three offices. The one closest to us and the one we went with did a big info session and they ran down the basics of the practice, which answered most of the general questions. Then they had a Q&A for the parent to ask additional questions. Then they did a tour of the exam rooms.

I am not sure what your plan is, but you could ask about delaying/seperating vaccines? The Dr.'s general attitude towards starting solids and feeding advice? Do they have a Lactation Consultant that works with their practice? (Mine doesn't by a friends practice does, which she said was very helpful after they left the hospital.)

I have more questions in my book at home. Let me know if you need more.

  • I think there's a check list on TB about questions to ask your pedi.  We found ours by word of mouth (my SIL and two of my coworkers use the same practice).  We met with them and did an interview prior to having Mariela and were hooked.  The best part is one of their offices is less than 5 minutes from our house.  We wanted to make sure they were associated with the "good" Children's Hospital in our area.  You should definitely ask what hospital(s) they work with, what their nighttime procedures are for emergencies, weekend hours, etc.

Funny story: when M was born our pedi came to see M in the hospital the day she was born and saw our last name on the chart.  My SIL had just told him she was expecting #2, so despite the fact it would be way too soon for her to have the baby he assumed it was her in the room.   He walked in and when he saw me in the bed and my SIL's firstborn asleep on my mom (Benji just happened to be visiting me with his Papa at that moment) he got so confused.  He said, "wrong room, sorry" and walked out.  DH and my BIL had to grab him to say nope, it's the right room and then he remembered Benji and M are cousins.  We still laugh about it at her appointments.

  • I got a list of recommendations at my first OB appt but haven't looked at it much.  The funny thing is Tim's pedi office is on there and he went there from the time he was a baby until he was in college.  His actual pedi is gone now, but I may start with them just because.

  • I absolutely love my primary doctor and she is a family physician.  So I am able to have him see her for his care.

  • We're going with one a friend and two of C's coworkers recommended. We haven't actually met with them yet but will tomorrow (it WAS on the agenda for this week...). We wanted to use the awesome guy who rounded at the hospital who our MFM speaks the world of (apparently it is in his divorce papers, paragraph 57, that his wife only use that doc for his kids...) but he doesn't take our insurance.

DH and I see a family doctor also, and he's fantastic. We'll be taking this baby to him as well.

  • We chose our pedi the day dylan was born. She was the one who was on call for that weekend and I just fell in love with her. She was absolutely amazing and even performed dylans circumcision. She also works at the same office my niece goes to and my sister liked them a lot so I figured I would go too. They are open a couple of nights a week for late appts, saturdays, and always have a dr on call for emergencies as well as a nurse line to call if you have a question about anything.
