annoyed by church sermon on sunday
granted, it was a "fill in" lecter - but I sat there and listened to this crapp for 10 minutes, and kept elbowing Nick.
She talked about how she went on sabatical (to the east coast, hardly a sabatical in my eyes but whatevs), and was told about a tribe that lived on a small island, and they were starving because the coral reefs were dying with all the trash that was in the ocean, and the fish eat the reefs - coral dies = fish dies = tribe dies. Then she went on statistics about the breakdown of trash in the dumps, and said that "faith" to her means using cfl lightbulbs and recycling. She also said that "We should take care of Gods planet - but instead we build bigger guns to kill God's children".........

If it wasnt for those "big guns" and loud boom booms, you would be either marching like the gestapo, or waiting in line for soup.
Why is this being talked about in church? Shouldnt the sermon be about the word in the bible and life teachings, not the green revolution and how a curly lightbulb is going to save some african tribe? I was sooooo annoyed, I totally bipassed this girl and didnt shake her hand on the way out.
And I still am thinking about the 15 minutes I wasted listening to it.

I always hate when you leave church annoyed by what was talked about. It feels wrong but sometimes they really do get off on weird subjects.
DH had an uncle pass away not to long ago. At the funeral the pastor went on and on and ON about how we have all these sins in life and how so many of us give caught up in those sins. His uncle was an alcoholic and died from a car accident when he was drunk. So basically the pastor was saying how drinking is a sin so his uncle lived a sinful life. I had a really hard time sitting there listening, especially when typically at a funeral you talk about how great of a life someone had - like the fact that he served in the war! Oh no lets just talk about how he sinned soooo much.

Seriously though, it sounds like she was really stretching for connections and kind of threw that message together or something. WTH do taking care of the planet and "killing God's children" with guns have to do with each other?
Well, if one wants to get technical, we, as God's kidlets, SHOULD be taking care of the earth He created. It is time for the dead to be judged- to reward your servants, the prophets, the saints, and all who fear your name, both unimportant and important, and to destroy those who destroy the earth. (Rev 11:18)
Then, of course, there are hundreds of passages which talk about taking care of the poor, etc. If there is a poor man among your brothers in any of the towns of the land that the LORD your God is giving you, do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward your poor brother. (Deuteronomy 15:7)
And finally, at least according to the New Testament, we shouldn't be at war. I would have to agree, though, that times have changed a bit.
What I'm saying is: She, really, isn't totally off-base. I'm guessing since "being green" is cool these days that she's trying to relate it to Christianity. Just my guess, though.

I can understand why you thought her wording/sequencing was a little strange (jumping from taking care of the environment---->big guns is quite the leap), but I can understand her sentiment. Taking care of the Earth and being good stewards of what we have is important as a Christian. Honestly, it puzzles me a little that more churches don't emphasize it more, but that is another post
I don't want to take her comment about "big guns" out of context, but I would guess she meant it more in the advocating for less violence and more peaceful resolution, not that ALL guns are evil... something that I would guess most pastors would advocate for.

I just like sermons that are less "political and issues" , and more "direct teachings out of the bible, quoting scriptures, ect...." I dont believe that those issues should be preached in church - ie, war, homosexuality, the environment, politics, abortion, ect.....I want to go to worship God, not to hear about using CFL bulbs and saving the coral.

that sermon wouldn't happen in Lincoln diocese where they are faaaaaar too conservative for it BUT, I much prefer that to the 'lets go to war' sermons that happen in a few of the parishes I have been to.
I'd take it..although the delivery seems to have sucked.
