Tax free weekend... what's the point?

Can you imagine a store advertising a 6.25% sale? Yet people go crazy over tax free weekend. When I worked in retail, we would take orders a week a head of time to process on that weekend. People would freak out!!! Ummm hello, you are only saving 6.25%... Oh well, I guess it's something to stimulate the shopping and any little bit of savings is helpful...

Re: Tax free weekend... what's the point?

  • DH and I have had this same conversation.  I guess if you've been eyeing something that never goes on sale anyway, then it makes sense.  Otherwise, I agree with you.
I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • Yeah, people end up buying crap they wouldn't otherwise buy. It's silly.

It only really makes sense if you're buying furniture or electronics.

  • I have never understood the appeal of that promotion either (and even when it was 5% sales tax). So weird. DH and I both worked in retail for a bit as well and that weekend was horrific- we would pre-order for people but then spent the ENTIRE day on the phone/ computer calling in/ placing orders.

I know what you mean! When I worked for RH we would have good furniture sales 30% off. But our numbers would go through the roof during TFW. I suppose if I were looking to purchase something like a new Mac. (that never goes on sale) it would be ok.

    ITA!

People would also go, "ZOMG! IT's tax free weekend! Let's hit Newbury!"

Um. We don't even pay clothing sales tax in Boston... lol

(or do you now? You didn't back when I lived there).

Umm, that's where we worked too... which store?!?

Nope, still no tax on clothes or groceries (*knock on wood*!).

Exactly! And EVERY weekend is tax free weekend in good old NH.
  • I started with company (part time) in 1998 in Princeton, NJ. Worked Princeton, and Red Bank, opened the flagship store in NY. In 2000 I moved to Boston and  worked at the Boylston Street store mostly. I also spent a summer working in Peabody. Where did you work?

unless you need something delivered to your house.  Plus, the drive to NH wouldn't necessarily be worth it depending on where you live (luckily for me, we're less than 15 minute from Nashua).

and I think it makes sense only if you're buying big things like furniture and electronics.  We're in the market for a new TV, so I mentioned the tax free weekend to DH.

Yes, it definitely depends on where you live.

Regardless, I would not go out of my way for tax free weekend or going to NH.

I also think, after my years in retail, that you are not getting any kind of deal. The semi annual sales will be a greater discount that buying at full price without tax.
