So DS has surgery on Friday and DH took him in for lab and was asked how much he would like to pay now.
He found it odd and throughout their conversation he asked...well how much do you want to pay. She said what do you want to pay. He said I don't know, how much is the surgery going to cost because from what he understood we have been given ballpark numbers but not exact so how can we pay a percentage of the cost if we don't have a firm number of what it is going to cost.
She told him they are trying to collect a % of the costs prior to procedures help with collection of medical bills from all their patients but here is my concern
I'm close to my max on payout for DS and I know I will get at least 2 bills one from the hospital and one from the doctor's office for the surgery. As with my labor and delivery, they processed the claim so late that by the time it was processed through insurance, I didn't have to pay my hospital charges thanks to insurance.
I don't really want to pay Children's any money because what if the doc's office processes payment quicker and maxes out the insurance allowing the hospital charges to be $0 pushing insurance to pay for it completely. If I pay a percentage of the estimated cost of surgery and they process it slow and I ended up not having to pay them for the surgery, what happens to that money?
They are supposed to call me either today or tomorrow to confirm insurance information but was wondering if others have been asked to pay up front and what percentage you put down. Right now, I'm thinking I will tell them I will pay after the fact but if anything only $18 which seems a little ridiculous but would probably at least pay for the lab work just done.
Re: Children's Hospital Question
Ditto!
I would also be hesitant to pay anything if you think you've met your OOP max for him.

We are keeping it private and only telling a few close friends and family for respect of the little guy. It will be a 3 hour surgery and what it is for is not as severe as it could be but needs to be fixed.
Totally understandable. T&Ps for a speedy recovery!

Thanks! Much Appreciated

Definitely wait if you think you're going to hit your OOP max for the year. A lot of medical providers are trying to collect up front now but it is not required of the patient to pay up front. Just tell them that you'd rather it be ran through your insurance first to see what they will allow, and then you will pay your balance afterwards. They wont turn you away.
Good luck to your little one and I hope he recovers quickly! =]
