I was reminded why I usually drive to work. What should have been a 25 minute commute took me 2.5 hours.
It went as follows:
Wait long time for train. Informed train will go to Van Ness and stop. We all offload and leave Van Ness to go outside for shuttle buses which are supposedly coming. Wait forever. Irate woman on phone with Metro discovers that shuttle buses are not coming, they decided against closing the station and decided to single track instead. Of course no one from Metro decided to come up and tell us. We all traipse back into station.
Wait forever for train to come. Understandable with single tracking. Mostly empty train going in right direction pulls into station, stops, never opens doors, takes off. Wait. Somewhat crowded train going in right direction blows through station. Wait. Very full train finally stops. Small amount of waiting people are able to wedge themselves on. Wait. Mostly empty train arrives. Great! Oh, nope, this train is offloading and switching directions. Mother effer.
Wait forever. 4 trains going in wrong direction go through. Wait some more. Half empty train going in right direction blows through station. Wait again. Half empty train comes, stops, never opens door, takes off. People start screaming and pounding on departing train out of anger and frustration. Wait another 20 minutes. Very full train arrives. Decide that I don't care if I have to step on people, I am getting on this train. It is now over 2 hours since I left work, and I have made it 3 stations.
I had the worst tension headache of my life by the time I got home. Thank God I have a pathological fear of being stuck somewhere without reading material, so the one saving grace was that I had a good book with me.
Re: Anyone else caught in that mess on the Red line tonight?
i'm so sorry, that SUCKS!! it took my friend an hour and a half to get from bethesda to cleveland park for the same reason. in NYC, i had way too many commutes turn into an epic odyssey, it's why i never left home without music and a book!
I'm angry just from reading that! I never have to take the red line in my daily commute, which I am super thankful for (had been considering moving to Rockville when we were looking to move to the area).
I always wonder how people get accidently struck by trains... do they just stand too close to the edge for no reason, lose their balance...?
