Free birth control

I've been watching this story progress, wondering if it's actually going to happen. It's sounding like it might. Basically, the government is saying birth control should be free, no co-pay, along with a host of other women's health services. Read more about it here. Was anyone else shocked to learn 50% of pregnancies are unplanned? What do you think of this plan?

Re: Free birth control

  • that stat (50% of pregnancies being unplanned) didn't shock me.

And I have long thought it to be unbelievable that effing VIAGRA is covered fully by insurance, but not BC. (it's been a long time since I've been on hormonal bc, but my sister is and just had to renew her insurance - through the state of texas, she's a teacher - and that is the case for her)

    I hope it happens.

If you can't afford birth control, how can you afford a child?

  • the 50% stat didn't shock me at all .. for my poor mom, 3/4 of her pg were unplanned. that's right, out of FOUR kids, only 1 was planned.

it's about time that they FULLY covered contraception. lord knows, when they covered viagara 100%, i was waiting for the outrage and the demand that birth control be covered 100%. after all, what's fair is fair.

  • I think fully covering BC is a step in the right direction, but I think the greater problem is education.

Right now (at least in Ca) there are so many programs that provide free BC, people just don't know they exist or how to gain access. I think that also goes for basic sex ed. Growing up there were so many kids that really had only a vague grasp on pregnancy and birth control options because their parents never wanted to have "the talk" with them. With the education system backing out of teaching sex ed, it seems to be getting worse.

  • I think if all goes well, it would be fantastic! Nice to see an administration that gets that a lot of these services are preventive and deserve to be covered the same way other preventive services are. I always thought it was a shame that bc is so expensive (the prescription I used to be on cost a total of $80 and I was responsible for $60 of it. EVERY MONTH.)

A couple of things that concern me are 1) Conservative lawmakers trying to pass legislation that would include a variety of exceptions. I don't yet know what exceptions they're trying to add, but I'm guessing they won't be things I support. 2) This grandfather clause mentioned in the article, exempting some health care plans from the new rules. The article says members of those plans might pressure their health care company to cover this stuff after all - but since when do insurance companies care more about member satisfaction than their own bottom lines?

And no, I'm not surprised by the 50% number. I would guess that most people are on birth control pills, which have a lot of potential for human error. And that doesn't even account for people who are not on birth control at all, or use something less reliable like condoms.

This legislation is not JUST about birth control. There is a large education/counseling/preventive exam portion too, which I think is a great thing.

I don't know enough about this, but the only program I know of that provides free BC and health care for women in CA on a consistent basis is Planned Parenthood (and even then, only after you prove you don't have your own insurance and/or can't afford to pay for it out of pocket). And politicians have been trying to take PP down for years and cutting their funding.

Ditto, and around here you have to walk through the protesters to get to PP.And I agree that even free and easy access to birth control won't solve the problem. Education goes a long way, plus some people are just dumb no matter what you try to teach them.

Yeah, it will be interesting to see how it's limited. I highly doubt Plan B is going to end up fully covered.
