Becoming a Military wife soon

My new husband of 3 weeks and our family will be moving soon.  My husband was in the Navy for 14 years and he has decided to go to the Army.  This is new for me and my children and I don't know what to expect.  Does anyone have any advice?

Re: Becoming a Military wife soon

  • Go with the flow. Don't believe it until its in writing, even sometimes that's not a guarantee. Do you have more specific questions? That's pretty vague.

  • I'm just nervous about being a military wife and dont know what to expect.  I hear so many stories.
  • Has he been to see a recruiter yet?  It's pretty hard for prior service to get in right now, especially when switching branches.

  • The best advice I can give so early in the process is "hurry up and wait."  And then prepare to continue doing that for a while.

as far as the "being a military wife" thing goes - I assume you are talking about stories regarding how horrible spouses are, etc? -  all I can say is that like most things in life, it is what you make it. If you want to make it an awesome adventure, it will be. If you want to find a lot of drama with other spouses, or get involved in their drama, you will. I have never had anything close to any kind of drama with other spouses.

  • I am actually in the Army and my fiance is as well. We realized early on the implications of what this could mean to us and our family planning for the future. We just communicate, communicate, communicate. Try to remain understanding as he goes through things you might not understand. Look for a wives support group and reading books by soldiers helps me look through the window into their lives and what it means to them, but the best rule of thumb is to always remain supportive and remind yourself how much he means to you when it gets rough. Its gonna get rough like all things in life, but always discuss it and learn to compromise. Its just another step in your journey with your best friend.
