Need Help-Job Related

I am currently an elementary music teacher teaching grades 1-4.  In addition I teach two after school activities (choir and bucket band) while having to give up my plan time twice a week.  The school I teach it is filled to capacity therefore I have no classroom and instead must use a cart to get to each class.  It really limits what I can do since I see all four grades levels every day and only so much can fit on a cart.  I have a fantastic relationship with my students, parents, faculty and the principal!

During the summer there are corporation wide postings that go out that only those currently employed with the corporation can apply for.  It is all based on seniority.  I love my school, but I really want a classroom so I can do more.  There is currently an elementary music position open at another school that has a classroom.  Beyond that I do not know much else.  I have been told the principal will be supportive of anyone that does their job correctly and that he is a musician himself (that is definitely at plus!).  There is no guarantee that I would get the job because it is based on seniority and I only have two years in the corporation.

So...What should I do?

Edit:

I should mention that if I apply for the second position and get it I have to take it.  It's not like I get to choose between the two to see which one is best for me.

  • Are there other pros and cons for the other job?  I think my biggest consideration would be the kids that I might end up with.  If the kids at the other school were comparable or better than the kids at your current school then it is a no brainer.  You would be REALLY fortunate to have a principal who knows and supports your discipline.  I am assuming since it is in the same corporation pay and benefits wouldn't change?

I think the students are comparable.  I looked at the state testing results, attendance, racial diversity, etc to kind of get an idea about the students.  And the pay and benefits would be the same.

  • In the new position would you be less likely to loose your prep time?  Would you still be seeing all grades every day?  How many music teachers are in your corporations?  How would your commute be effected?

They have a full time art teacher which my building does not have so I should have no problem getting all my preps.

I am fairly certain I would be seeing all grade levels each day, but I have never worked with this principal and he is the one that makes the schedule so no guarantees.

As far as how many music teachers we have in our corporation my guesstimation is about 60ish.

My commute would not be effected too much.  I live 20ish minutes from my current position. The other position would be a 25ish minute drive.

I would go for it then.

  • After reading through the posts, I would definitely apply.  My former school, although private, was in a similar situation.  The music teacher had a classroom but as we filled up, she lost it and had to go into the classrooms for music time.  She always said that she is just so limited when it was like that.  I am a teacher and couldn't imagine doing anything without a set classroom

  • There's no harm in trying, right? I say go for it.
  • I e-mailed my letter of intent for the position to Human Resources.  Keep your fingers crossed!
