Cricut users..please come in.

I used to be here a LOT but mostly lurk now and then due to time restrictions.  But for my DH's family we have to buy for everyone in the family.  (42 people).  I am considering getting a cricut and doing something like a batter bowl that I could do the vinyl lettering along with a box of brownies or something else on that line.

So tell me please, what would the best model be for doing some lettering things.  Mostly vinyl I would think.  But I do enough scrapbooking and other crafting that I would use it at other times also.  What kind of added expenses would I be looking at?  how much does the vinyl for the machines run?  Any cartridges you would suggest??

TIA for any tips or advice!  And fyi...this is something I can looking at doing SOON so I can get them done with!!  I hate the Christmas season due to all the crazies in the stores so would like to get supplies, get out of the stores and be able to stay sane.  (well...as sane as I CAN get.....)

Re: Cricut users..please come in.

  • The cricut model that you will want will depend on how big you want your final cuts to be.  If you plan on only doing lettering/etching on glassware you can get the smaller and less expensive cricut.

Are you planning on etching the bowls or just putting the vinyl on?  If you are planning to etch you can just use contact paper from a roll, you don't need a special vinyl.  If you just want to adhere vinyl I would use a higher quality vinyl which you can buy by the foot from somewhere like H&H signs!

  • As a cricut user who is fed up with provocraft, I would buy a silhouette. They can cut everything a cricut can cut but they produce a crisper cut. You can also run SCAL and MTC and cut just about anything off the internet without having to purchase cartridges.  Here is the silhouette's website. They are just introducing a new model that cuts up to 12".

  • see...now I feel stupid.  lol  I didn't know there was a choice of just sticking it on (which i thought is what they all did) or etching it on.  It would be the vinyl letters on a plastic bowl if that matters.

So are you saying that I can do so it's open letters (don't know if that's the right description) so that I can put it on glass then do the glass etching?  If so, that would be AWESOME too!

If you use the "background" instead of the letters you will basically create a stencil to etch with.

  • I think I am sold already then!  So with the silhouette, do you buy cartridges like the cricut or is it all online and downloaded to your computer?

No carts!  It will cut any image/font you have on your computer (including the internet) or you can purchase individual images from the Silhouette store.

  • sweet!  I think I'm sold!  Too bad noone around here sells it.  I prefer to buy local, but will purchase online when I have to.
  • another question.  If I go with the silhouette (like I think i will) can i use the vinyl for the cricut or is it completely different?
  • I purchased the Cricut personal during a sale so I got a great price for it, but I would rather have kept saving for a Silhouette mainly because you can print any image from the internet without having to buy cartridges. Even on sale, Cricut cartridges range from $40 to $90. A little hard to swallow when I think about how much craft stuff I can buy for that $40.
  • I think that you can use the same vinyl but if you are going to etch you might just want to buy cheap contact paper to make the stencil out of rather than expensive vinyl.

You'll need to use 8.5" or smaller width vinyl with the silhouette.
