Cleaning Mold off Bathroom Windowsill

For some reason.. someone (when building our house in the 1950's) thought it would be a good idea to build a window in the bathroom. But not just in the bathroom.. in the shower! Obviously we have the window blurred so no one can see in or out, but we are constantly getting mold on the windowsill. And since it's in the shower, it's very difficult to keep dry constantly! Any ideas on how to remove this mold? Or keep it from coming back?

 TIA

Re: Cleaning Mold off Bathroom Windowsill

  • I've had a couple of windows in the tub before.  For cleaning I use a bathroom spray with bleach (its from Lysol, I know it specifically mentions mildew on the front of the bottle) and in between deep cleanings use a little bit of vinegar.  To prevent do what you can to keep it from getting wet (don't use the ledge to put shampoo on or anything) and wipe it dry after each shower.  Also make sure you're using the bathroom fan whenever the shower is running.

  • Strip the window.

Our old house has a window in the shower.  Even though we clean everything thoroughly and frequently, mold was appearing on the window ledge.   We brought in a specialist who said the prior owners probably painted over some mold before they sold it to us.  So that even though we scrub, we never get the mold under the paint.

We stripped the window, repainted it with an anti mold paint (from Home Depot) and have no more problems.
