Tips for cleaning wood and tile floors?

I finally broke down and cleaned. The vacuuming went better than expected, but only because of the monstrosity we (well, I and my shedding!) managed to accumulate on the wood and tile. Anyone who says those are lower maintenance than carpet can go F-themselves. Stick out tongue

So, because we both hate to clean (and apparently suck at it), two questions:

1. How do you clean wood and tile floors? I broom swept and we have one of those steamer things, but it doesn't seem to actually *do* anything. I HATE broom sweeping, though, and, like I said, suck at it. I think the only think I hate more is wet mopping. DH is better at sweeping than I am, but we alternate every other time, so I'd like to make my times go more smoothly.

2. In a couple of spots on the kitchen (tile) floor, there are these things that look like little scuff marks. Scrubbing them with a wet rag didn't take them off. Any idea what I can use to sort of "scratch" them off without scratching up the tile?

  • 1. Go buy a Hoover Floor Mate.  I got mine at BB&B.  It's amazing.  You basically vacuum, it spits out clean water with a cleaning solution in it, uses circular brushes to scrub the floor, and it sucks the dirty water back into a reservoir.  It's awesome!  I'm not sure that I'd use it on wood, but for Tyler it's awesome.

    2.  Would Mr. Clean magic eraser do the trick?  That seems to work on everything.

    You rock!

    1. The magic eraser worked perfectly!

    2. I'll definitely check out the Hoover, thanks!

  • Do not do not do not do not use anything with steam or water on your wood floors.

For our wood - I usually sweep with a broom that is similar to one used in a gymnasium.  Then, I quickly vacuum to get the excess dirt.  If I need to wipe up a particular spot - OR - if we have just finished renos and the floors are still way dusty, I take a rag that is barely damp and wash them on my hands and knees. I am usually down there cleaning my d@mn baseboards anyway.

As far as the tile - I am with boymom - try the magic eraser.

  • This is good for a light mop for wood floors: http://www.rubbermaid.com/Category/Pages/SubCategoryLanding.aspx?SubCatId=SprayMopping&CatName=CleaningUtility

It doesn't put down too much water. Our floor guy mentioned it - we have laminate.

So you can vacuum the wood floors? Sorry if this is dumb---mine are dark, like yours, so they show dirt/hair/scuz quickly and this is the first time I've had an (actual) wood floor. I just want to be sure.

And I'm off to Lowes tomorrow to buy a janitor broom :)
