Finding a new church

We have decided we need to start going to church again, not only for the spiritual growth, but also to meet new people and make some couple friends.  What is the protocol for being a visitor at a new church?  As a child I remember my family always sitting in the EXACT SAME SPOT every week...I don't want to take someones beloved spot!

We are living in the I-10/Hwy 6 area right now.  We're thinking either Methodist (Him) or Anglican/Episcopal (Me).  Does anyone know of any churches in the area that have a large young (30's) congregation with lots of opportunities? (Kind of like Woodlands UMC...)

We are looking for a church and live in this area too.  I am curious to see the answers.

  • We have some friends that go to Kingsland Baptist Church in Katy and love it, and have made lots of young couple friends. I think it's probably 10-15 minutes from the intersection of I-10 and Hwy 6, but I am not really familiar with the area.

  • Not exactly close, but we go to Foundry United Methodist at 290 and Jones.  We don't go every Sunday because we're OOT, but when we are in Houston, we enjoy going.

I grew up Lutheran and DH grew up Baptist, so why we picked at Methodist church...I don't know.  I really like it.  It is very similar to the Lutheran church.  DH isn't quite as comfortable, but he's getting there.  He's just not a fan of the music leader, and I tell him that isn't a good excuse.  They have 3-4 different ministers who preach and we really like all of them.  Everyone is very friendly, although we're not totally involved like I wish we were.  I just don't like to commit when we're OOT so often.

The only hang up we have is that DS hates the nursery.  I have no idea why - they seem nice, feed him, play outside, etc.  But when we pull in the parking lot he cries.  Drives me crazy, but I think part of it is that we don't go often enough.  I'm trying to change that, but it will take time.

The church is also very involved in the community - as far as charity and giving back.

  • My SIL goes to Memorial Drive Baptist Church... When we lived in the Heights we went quite often with her.  I really enjoyed the services and my kids liked the children's church programs.

It's on Piney Point Dr, near i10 and campbell.

  • We go to Houston's First Baptist and love it.  It's not hard core "Baptist" - we both come from a Catholic background and love it.

They have an awesome kids program and groups for every age. Plus, you can go to the more casual Sunday evening service at 5:30 and wear jeans, etc.   I would recommend trying it out.

I wouldn't worry about sitting in someone's seat!  We sit in the same general area every time but would never think twice about someone new there!

  • DH and I have been looking for a new church as well. We found one in that area I loved, Memorial Church of Christ.

They have a fantastic congregation with a super active couples/families community. I was in love with their small groups and the whole atmosphere but DH could not get past the lack of music. They sing some hymnals but not like he was raised (Baptist) so we are still looking.

If he could get over the music thing I would join in a heartbeat. Good luck with your search.

  • I grew up at Memorial Drive UMC. It's on Memorial, between Wilcrest and the Beltway. They have a great family life program in addition to a very involved youth program. We always felt a huge sense of community there and loved it.

  • We have been attending Holy Spirit Episcopal for about a year now.  It's on Perthshire right off of Gessner. Near Memorial City Mall.

They have both a traditional and a contemporary service.  We go to the contemporary service.  I was raised Lutheran and my husband was raised Episcopal.  The contemporary service still incorporates the creeds and a lot of the tradition with newer music.  They only offer a newcomers class once a year which is in the fall.  I think we're going to become members since we've been going a year and really like it.

I went to HSES from Pre-K - 5th grade, and subsequently, their chapel services during this time. It was a great place!

We don't have kiddos yet but we've already inquired about the school just for fun!

I've been thinking of trying The Foundry, and I have heard the exact same thing about the worship leader being the worst part.  I know that's not reason enough not to try a church, but still...if the reputation of the worship guy is THAT bad, it makes me wonder why they keep him.

  • Oh, and back the the OP:  When we lived at Barker Cypress and 10, we attended (AND LOVED) Bridgepoint Bible Church.  It's on the south side of 10 before the beltway.  Look for the large, white sign with the sort of modern cut-out of a cross.

They had a huge and really active young marrieds group that we attended, but I know they also have a group for young families.  We loved the people there, and loved the feel of the church.  It wasn't TOO big to do whole church potlucks, etc. but it wasn't TOO small, where we felt like everyone was in our business.

This is also the church where we did a Sunday night Dave Ramsey class.  I would highly recommend that class, if you haven't taken it before.  We not only met a diverse group of people (because they weren't all young married couples), but we really got a lot out of the class.

It's been years since we attended, but the music was great, the teaching was great, and we wouldn't have left, but we moved to Spring.  It was just TOOOO far to drive.

I am involved in some things at Foundry but haven't actually been to a worship service there. We are considering trying it out in a couple of weeks.

Is the issue with all the services? I have never been to a traditional service in which a music person made that big of a noticeable impact, so I'm wondering if it's a contemporary service thing...

  • We attend Crossbridge Church which is non-denominational.

    http://crossbridge.cc/

It's off of Eldridge between Westpark Tollway and HWY 90.  We have a large group of people in the age range you are talking about. Services are at 9:30 and 11:15 on Sunday mornings.  Come and check it out :)
