Renewing Passport Abroad

The US embassy in Norway says that when getting a new passport (thus cancelling your old one) you can put a note on any current visas that are stamped in requesting they not cancel that page of your old passport.

Do all countries do this?

My passport is up for renewal in a year and I will have to renew it from abroad, though I don't know where.  TveryfarIA!

Re: Renewing Passport Abroad

  • When I got my new passport and my Aussie visa was still in the old one they just told me to carry the old one with me when I was traveling, so I was carrying two passports with me. Then going through customs one time the customs guy said, "oh, you know I can just link both of your passports so you won't have to carry two?" and 20 seconds later it was done! There were no dramas at all!

  • H renewed his several months ago in CH. He was told to carry both the cancel passport with the visa in it and his new passport when traveling to the countries for which he had the visas. Because I'm paranoid I had him call the embassies of those countries to make sure they'd accept a visa that is in an expired passport. At least with regard to those countries, canceling a passport does not cancel the visa inside. ETA: Sorry, to answer your actual question, no. The US embassy in Switzerland does not do that.
  • DH had to carry two passports for a while and we renewed in the UK. It took almost no time but had had two passports for over a year.

  • Thanks for the replies.

For those who've done it, so did the page containing your visa get hole punched?

Yeah, everything got hole punched.  However, since the US didn't issue the visas, the US doesn't have the power to cancel them.  KWIM, it's up to that specific country if they recognize the visa as being cancelled or not.  I haven't come across a country that considers a visa in a cancelled passport to be cancelled, but you should still check anyway.

This exactly. Mine got hole punched right through as well, but my Visa was still good.
