Taking the plunge

I've lived here for close to two years now. I don't get out much because my H is disabled and I feel uncomfortable leaving him alone for long. I really haven't found anyplace I like going for short periods of time other than the local library.

I am friends with my H's siblings but we have nothing in common other than my H, and I'm sort of with the wives of his friends but they all live too far away (about 4 hours) to really get close too. I haven't really made any other friends here and I'm a little bit shy and it takes me a long time to make friends.

I have finally decided to attend a local knitting class that I'm told is more like a social group that I've found through one of the local craft stores. I'm just really hoping this is a good fit and I might get a friend or two out of it. Wish me luck? I'm really nervous about it.

Re: Taking the plunge

  • Good luck! Make sure you come back and let us know how it goes.
  • That sounds like fun! I know one of my in-laws adores her knitting (er, social) group! Have fun!
  • Best of luck :D That sounds like super fun! I bet you're going to love it.

  • Good luck!  It can be hard to meet new people but once you do you will be so glad you did it!

  • Thanks ladies - it helps knowing you've all been in similar situations and can relate to what I'm going through. The support on this board is amazing as are all of you! :)

  • I've been putting myself out there more recently, even asked for a PFT's phone number, yes I'm brave ;) Hope you enjoy your class as much as I've enjoyed y Mums group!

  • Have fun!  I'd go into it with the intent of doing some knitting and the hope of meeting a few people...even if you don't become great friends with anyone, you at least will now have a social outlet once in a while, which is VERY healthy!
I like pineapples...they make life just so much more interesting.
  • That sounds great!  I've wanted to learn how to knit for a long time.
  • Good luck, I know EXACTLY how you feel.  I am the same way, shy and nervous meeting new people.  The one friend that I actually made here and got along with SO well, she moved to India back in April.  It's a total bummer.

  • Good luck! That sounds like a lot of fun. It can be really hard to get started but it will definitely get easier. It's nice to have a regular thing going on each week too.

And seriously, your siggy picture makes me instantaneously hungry. We were just back in the states for 2 weeks and I made my DH drive out of our way about 4 times so I could have that bagel for breakfast.

  • Yay! I have been wanting to find a knitting group too! Even if you won't be best buds with the ppl in the group, a change of scenery every now and then can work wonders on your general well-being. Good luck and let us know how it goes!
  • Luck to you!

I'm glad you're doing something for yourself and I hope you make some good friends this way.  :)   Even if you don't make friends outside the class hopefully you'll have fun just socializing like Pineapples said.  I recently went to a maternity swimming class and I didn't become good friends with the other ladies, but we had such a blast during the class and I got some good exercise twice a week.

  • Good for you!

I wanted to join a mom and baby club and by the time I got the nerve they had shut down for the summer. LOL. I am still going, but just have to wait 6 more weeks before I do.

Sadly, there won't be any cool things like needles and yarn and I certainly won't be getting booties, scarves, or sweaters out of it. So I am liking your plunge better than mine. Wink

  • Good luck.   It may take going a few times first, but I bet you'll make a new friend or two.

  • Yay! My Stitch n' B!tch club when I lived in Canada was how I made amazing friends. I actually just went back last month to visit them all.

And, like everyone else said, even if it's not automatic friendships it gets you out of the house and active! Plus, having an activity to keep you busy helps take any pressure off the social aspect.

If you ever want to show off your projects. I'd love to see some. I've lost all my creative inspiration without my knitting buddies.

  • You gals are really wonderful. I am looking very much forward to the social aspect of the knitting class even if i don't get any friends out of it. At least if will be interaction with people. Thanks everyone. :)
