Best room deodorizer?

I just moved into a rental and the bathroom has a strange smell.  I've scrubbed it down twice, but it always returns 1-2 days later.  I've used those Bath and Body Wallflowers in the past and was disappointed (they only last 2-3 weeks at the most).  I bought potpourri just 4 days ago, and now that is not working either.  I went ahead and put a box of baking soda in the bathroom.

Do you guys have any other suggestions in the case the baking soda doesn't take care of it??

Thanks in advance!

Re: Best room deodorizer?

  • For a purely cosmetic fix, I have a friend that loves the Glade (pretty sure that's the brand she uses) plug ins. I think she finds a good deal on those and the refills at Costco and/or Bed, Bath and Beyond (using coupons). I mentioned her living room smelled so good and that is what it was! I assume it would work well in the bathroom.

It might be good to mention it to the landlord to see if they can check for an underlying problem.

  • I really like the febreze air freshners because you don't have to plug them in. They have one that is an odor remover. It has a nice clean smell too.

  • I use Crystal Elements. They are cube shaped and can be put in any dish. I put them in dollar store vases. I've seen them in ruby berries and vanilla. I get them from Target and most grocery stores have them.

  • I have a lampe berger that I absolutely love.  it is expensive but worth it (IMO) I recieved it as a gift. I only use it once a week and the house always smells fresh.

  • Stumbled upon this thread as I'm looking for a similar fix.  I also rent and this place has one of those unique home smells... you know, you have friends and relatives whose homes have a certain smell.  Well it's more concerning when it's your own home.  Anyone out there who has tips to deodorize the whole house, that would be nice too!

I use a scentsy, carpet freshner sprinkle, candles, etc... but the "scent" prevails when I leave and come home.  Help - company coming this week!

Try changing your air filter in your furnace. If you haven't been using it, maybe spray your furniture with some fabreze or something that takes the smell out, not covers it up? Could be your carpets too.

  • I purchased a AirWick automatic thing. It goes off so many times an hour or so and our room always smells fresh. The refills are cheaper than most at around $5 each.

  • If you have carpets sprinkle the floors with baking soda than vacuum up. Thats for the whole house smells.

Bathroom, use a self cleaning tablet or those gel  things that go right in the toilet. I found that if I didn't have those or didn't clean my toilet every single day it had a funk to it. This seemed to help. Also try damp rid. It absorbs moisture in the air with crystals & than you just dump the water in the toilet. It helps keep moisture down in the bathroom & any yucky smells.
