Q about coloring my hair

I don't know anything about coloring my hair.  I'm starting to get more visible grays than I'm comfortable with, so I'd like to color them or at least make them less visible in my dark auburn hair.  But. .. I really don't want to spend a lot of money to get it done at the salon and its not a ton of gray, its just alot around my hairline & temples, so its very visible to me.

If I use a drugstore brand will that alter the rest of my hair?  Or is there some kind of touch up thing I can use?

Re: Q about coloring my hair

  • I used to be the queen of hair color... you name it I tried it.  I used box color in college and until I was one or 2 years out of college, then I went the pro route- until it was time to go back to my natural color and I used box color to cover up my old highlights.

I used Natural Instincto cover up my highlights- it's demi-permanent and is good for 28 shampoos- so the color will fade before you have the chance to grow out super noticeable roots.  It's gentle on your hair- no ammonia and your hair will look and feel healthy afterwards. I would read some boxes- if you can find a formula that doesn't have peroxide in it, you could choose a shade a tone or 2 lighter than your natural color and turn the grays into highlights w/o worrying about the read of your hair going lighter.

  • I have a tiny patch of grey right in the middle of my forehead.  You can't see it when my hair is down, but it's right up front when I pull my hair back, so I use one of those root touch up kits, closest to my shade, from the drug stores and only cover the greys and you can't tell at all I've colored my hair.  I've used 2 or 3 different brands, whatever is on sale at Target.

  • I need to cover my greys, for now I'm accepting them as highlights. :(

Ditto on Natural Instincts - I have used it for years in between trips to the salon. However, recently I have noticed the grays are not covering up (which is a problem with the demi-permanent dyes) so depending on your grays, you might need to try a permanent color.  But I do (did) love how the Natural Instincts fades out so it doesn't leave massive roots.
