What is the biggest advice you can give to me for an interview?
Backstory: I have been at this company for 2+ years and have consistently been a top performer. I applied for a new position and after a phone screening, have been called back for a interview with the manager of the department. I REALLY want to do well, this job would be a 10-15k raise and would be challenging and exciting for me. The problem is, I suck at interviewing. My worst issue is probably that I panic when confronted with a question I am not sure how to answer, and end up saying something dumb or rambling. However in reality, I am very qualified for this position and I know I would rock.
Any advice or tips you could give would be great. In addition to this position in another department, there are also 4 openings in my current department for something I have always wanted to move to...so I put my name in for that, and am waiting to hear. I have recommendations from 2 supervisors for this one, so I am hoping I will at least get an interview - and again, I will need all the advice I can get if it comes to that point!!
Re: Interview advice - lay it all out there!
I am going to give you advice just for this particular issue. Don't be afraid to say "I don't know", ask for clarification on a question, or take a few moments to gather your thoughts before you answer. Sometimes there is no right answer and an interviewer is more interested in seeing how you'd work through it and wants to hear you think out loud. A simple, "I'm not sure about the question, I think you're asking about X" can be very helpful in getting you back on track.
And it might not hurt to practice with someone in a mock interview.
I'd also recommend googling typical interview questions and answers, and have some questions in mind to ask before the interview is over.

My biggest advice is practice, practice, practice, practice, practice. Google "interview questions" and make yourself a huge list. Or pick up a book of them at your local bookstore. Then, sit down with your best friend, your husband, your mom, or whomever you trust, and ask them to drill you - one after the next. When you stumble on a question, have them note it and come back to it later in the interview practice to give you another chance to answer it. I found if I did this enough, I felt like there was no question they couldn't ask me.
I also consistently rehearsed "Why do you want to work for this company?" and "Tell me why you'd be a good fit for this job." Before interviews, I recited these answers in the shower, on the train, in my head, on my iPad, wherever I could.
The key is making yourself prepared enough that even if you do get "stumped", you have some fallbacks.
