If you cook a lot, how many...

paring knives do you have? How about kitchen sheers?

I am thinking of adding to my cutlery collection but am kind of thinking it's over kill to have 4+ paring knives (I have 3 now) and 3+ sheers (I have 2 now)... Do you have multiples and actually use them?

Re: If you cook a lot, how many...

  • I have 2 pairs of shears, and have thought about a 3rd at times.

Paring knives - I have 6, all different lengths/shapes, and there have been days where every last one of them has been used.

  • I have one pairing knife and one pair of shears.  I cook at least 5 nights a week and rarely ever use a pairing knife or the shears.  I have considered getting another small chef's knife.  It is the one I use the most.

    Pretty much this.

  • I have two small random paring knives that we were given as wedding gifts.  Both are still in pretty good condition, although I don't know how much they cost or even where they came from.

I also have two of these.  For the price, I think they are worth buying.  Ours were very sharp for the first two years or so, and I like that they have a sheath.  Now they work ok for cutting most things, but aren't quite as sharp.  The cost makes them easy to replace though, IMO.  MIL bought them individually somewhere, but I think they were about $10-15 each.  She also bought two larger ones last year, but they were never as sharp as the paring knives.

I have one set of shears and they suck.  I need new ones...I'm adding that to my Amazon list.

This.  I actually have 3 pairs of shears but I don't know where the 3rd pair went to.

  • 3 paring knives (although 1 of them sucks and needs to be thrown out) and 2 sheers.

  • One good paring knife, but I use my chef's knife way more.  One pair of shears.

What are you guys doing in the kitchen that merits three?

  • I have 4 paring knives and 1 sheer and 1 kitchen scissors. I have the scissors so I can still open things or cut cilantro if I used the sheers on raw meat.

I use the paring knives because they don't get washed every day - 2 of them are cheapies that go in the dishwasher and 2 are good ones.

  • I have 1 paring knife which I rarely use.  1pr of shears that gets used daily and run through the dishwasher.

I also have 2 Santokus in different sizes, a chef's knife, and a serrated bread/tomato knife.

  • One paring knife. Is a kitchen shears the same as a scissors? LOL! I do cook, but I'm short on gadgets. I did just buy a lime sqeezer because I love making ceviche.
  • I have one paring knife which rarely ever gets used (I use my chef's knife most of all)...although we took a knife skills class this past weekend used the paring knife and I really enjoyed it.

I have two pairs of kitchen shears.  We use them regularly enough so that we need two.  Paring knife?  Meh.

I use my chef's knives for most meals but I use paring knives for things like cutting berries for the boys lunches, cutting up anything small in to bite sized pieces. I love to use my really sharp one for trimming fat off of meat. I use at least 2 a day. I often hand wash because I need them but would be happy to have a couple more since I only run my dishwasher every other day.

I am a slave to my dishwasher, that thing runs daily.  I use our steak knives to cut fruit for F and I have 16 of those...so I guess I get it.

I too use steak knives to cut fruit for the kids.  I have a ton of them and go through a lot cutting fruit for nearly every meal.  I also run the dishwasher at least once a day, sometimes twice.

I have an entire set of sheers I bought at Costco.  All different kinds and shapes.  I think there are 5 pairs.  However, I don't use them super frequently.

  • 1 paring that I hardly use and 2 shewed - one for meat/food and 1 for general purpose. Use both of those quite a bit. Otherwise I just have 2 chef's knives that I use constantly.
  • hmm.

6 paring knives (5 of which are Tupperware and I either got them very cheap or freebies, 1 I had previously)

1 pair of sheers... I need another, it gets sticky a lot from opening popsicles.

I have a whole drawer full of knives though: bread, chef, utility, etc.  They all get used with a pretty good frequency.

  • 1 paring knife and 0 kitchen shears (thanks to people taking off with them to use int he garage or cut paper).  I use my large kitchen knife most of the time instead of the paring knife.  And if I am cutting multiple things, I just rinse it off between uses.  I wash it by hand with the pots and pans after I am done cooking.  I do have 3 cutting boards though.

Ah, see, I have 4 steak knives and they S.U.C.K! That is on our Christmas list for this year (what kind do you have if you really like them?)

I have a lot of knives but I don't feel the need for more chef style and 1 serrated does me just fine. I just like the control of a small knife for certain tasks.

I guess I do think I have enough though. Thanks for all the feedback. Basically, I just need to keep washing the ones I have and not be a lazy brat!

  • We actually don't have any shears, though Dh would like at least a pair for chicken. Pairing knives, I feel you can't ever have too many. I think we currently have five and I actually want more. We have Henckels, OXOX, & Kitchen Aid brand and I'd like more of the Henckels and Kitchen Aid ones. Yes, we use them all, often. I have my preferred ones and so does DH.

LIke other posters,we use them for cutting up things mostly for DS or peeling things. What I'd love more of are Santokus. We have 2 of those and I use the smaller one all the time for doing actual cutting, slicing, dicing, etc. The one we had somehow disappeared when we moved the other year.

I have 4 pearing knives - all pampered chef (I was a consultant once in my life and got them cheap!) I have two pairs of shears but dont use them as often.

I do have three Pampered Chef utility knives that I use daily.

I also dont like to wash in between.  When cooking I want to set it all out and go.  I usually have two or three cutting boards going and "stations" so that I can do it all at once and move from one to another.  It is all dishwasher safe and as I go I throw it in.  I also have teenagers and get them to help in the kitchen so I need more knives to make them help.  Each of us have the ones we like.  I agree with your statement about the smaller knives, they fit better for me, for most of the things I do.

We have a JA Henckles Knife Block set we got as a wedding gift.  It is 7 years old.  It is good for some things, but I want to upgrade. To what...I havent done enough research.
