Wine Tours

Any recommendations for winery tours/tasting within 4ish hours of Metro Detroit?  I've heard Leelenau Peninsula and Niagara-on-the-Lake are good...  Do you recommend using a tour company or driving yourself around?  Good places to stay?  Thanks!

Re: Wine Tours

  • The Leelanau Penninsula is great!  The Old Mission Penninsula is where you want to go for it up there.  If you go there, just pick up the winery brouchure at any of the touristy places that have free brouchures, drive your way up the penninsula, and taste away!  I've gone with both DH and my mom different times, and had a great time both times.  Chateau Chantal has great views.  You can see the water in both directions when you stand out on the patio.

As far as where to stay, that depends on how much you want to spend.  I've stayed in the Days Inn in Traverse City, and was pretty impressed with it, actually.  That'd be the way to go if you want to go inexpensive.  If you're looking to spend more Chateau Chantal has a B & B, there's the Black Star Farms Inn, or one of the other many B & B's in the area.

  • I've never been on a wine tour/tasting in NOTL but I LOVE it there in general. I haven't been in a long time. I have a friend that goes up regularly though.  Lots to do there it seems. Great shopping too.

  • Yeah, you need to go to the Leelenau Peninsula!  It is amazing!  There are also a few winery's on the Old Mission Peninsula, which is right next to the Leelenau Peninsula!  (In fact, I'm headed there this weekend)  I would try to stay in Traverse City somewhere, or perhaps one of the small towns (Leeland, Suttons Bay, Glen Arbor, just to name a few).  We plan on just driving ourselves, but that is because we have a designated driver for the weekend!! Big Smile But I'm sure that there are tours that make the rounds. Especially in the Leelenau Peninsula!

  • Oh!!! And I don't know when you're planning on going, but if you're looking to get adventurous, Traverse City does what they call the "Great Macaroni and Cheese Bake off" and it is basically a wine tour, where all of the wineries make mac and cheese to compliment their wines.  It's the Saturday after Thanksgiving, and I'm definitely hoping to go, because those are two of my favorite things! • Leelanau Peninsula!  DH and I mini-mooned there, and we were just up there two weeks ago with my whole family both times hitting the wineries.  It is truly my favorite place in the world!  My family has vacationed in Glen Arbor since I was about 13, it is beautiful up there!  If you go to LPWines.com you'll be able to see a winery map, but like pp said, it's the same one  you can pick up at almost any touristy spot.  As for lodging, I know the Whaleback Inn is pretty nice, as is the Homestead-my family usually stays here, but this is more condos, and might require a weeklong stay.
