Washer smells bad

We just moved into a new place, and it has an in-unit washer/dryer. However, instead of getting our clothes clean, the washing machine seems to be making them all smell really gross. Is there anything I can do to fix that? I'm a total newbie at this sort of thing, but I can't go around all the time smelling like that, nor can my DH.

Re: Washer smells bad

  • I had the same problem with my washer. I ran an empty load with super hot water, laundry soap, bleach and fabric softener. Before the spin cycle, I took a clean washcloth around the entire machine - inside and out. It seemed to help the smell! Hopefully it will help you!

  • Pull the machine away from the wall, Turn off the power, unscrew the back of the machine and see if you have a full drain trap.  Each machine has a filter to trap things from getting into the plumbing.  This trap should be emptied periodically.

It will get full of lint and other debris.  This debris can grow mold if it goes unemptied and stays wet.  Once you remove the wet lint, wipe down the lint trap with a bathroom cleaner then replace everything, turn the power back on and run an empty hot cycle with bleach as PP said.

Your clothing should stop having the unpleasant aroma.

  • Thank you! I'm going to have to get some bleach (our cleaning supplies are not very comprehensive at all right now) and I'll try running a load with it. If that doesn't work, I'll have DH look at the back of it to clean it out. I am very much looking forward to not smelling gross all the time anymore!
  • Vinegar works as well as bleach for getting bad smells out too!! I set it to run hot, added a bottle of vinegar, and also used a rag to wipe out the whole inside of the washer, and the smell disappeared!

  • tide has a washer cleaner that I found worked great
  • Bleach will get the smell out of the washer itself, but you need to help your clothes too. Get some color safe bleach too and put it in with all of your loads for a while-- it works wonders for that nasty moldy/ mildewy smell. I didnt learn this until i had yucky baby washcloths, i wish i had known it sooner!
  • We cleaned the filter trap, which looked like it had never been done before.  Then ran an extra large extended soak cycle with hot water and white vinegar.  Took care of the problem.
  • The bleach worked wonders! It's amazing how much better I feel with clothes that don't smell like mold.
  • My washing machine is from like the '80s, so I feel your pain.  Every month, I grab an all-purpose cleaner, a green scrub pad, and go to town.  I spray the entire inside and scrub it by hand, making sure to get underneath the brim at the very top, and I can also scrub at the very top of the agitator.  I scrub all along the lid, and every possible crevice I can find.  Then run a hot cycle with bleach.

Tip: after washing, leave the washer lid/door open for at least an hour to let it dry out to prevent mildew and mold.  Hope this helps!!

We had to do this when we bought our new house. It worked like a charm. Now on a monthly basis I run an empty load with hot water, bleach and a little fabric softner (just for the scent) and then wipe it down.
