My fellow Americans!

Hello!

I officially naturalized yesterday and I'm now an American citizen! :) ::waves::

Re: My fellow Americans!

  • Congratulations! That is wonderful!

I have seen a few naturalization ceremonies and they always make me cry.  How was yours?

  • It was very fun! They added us to the end of the day (late) because they had so many approvals lately so we were a very small class of 16. There was a very sad asylum case earlier in the day that delayed everyone so the USCIS team wanted to "make it happen" for those of us who waited an extra 1.5 hrs. It was just neat to be "official" after being here in the US for so long...and working in politics.

None of us cried but we were all big dorks with huge smiles on our faces taking all sorts of pictures of one another by the flag and the pledge. Our officiant was a pretty funny guy so we mostly laughed. After the video message from the President they had us sit through a photo/video montage to "I'm Proud to be an American" that was, um, it left several of us in giggles for how literal it was (the lyrics said "stand up" and it was always a crowd of folks standing up; the lyrics said a specific part of the country and the cut was that exact cut of the country - it was fun and in the end we were all singing along).

Then we all went downstairs and the whole class registered to vote right away before we went home. That was the best part!

"just" Canada. It was hardly the transitional moment for me as it was for some in the room and earlier in the interview waiting room (like the woman trying to get through the asylum process who had once been deported back to her country and was tortured there). It was neat to be there for those cases though and help take their pictures by the flags. :)
