AC out in Rent house

Our AC went out in our house, we live in a rent house. We tried to call the landylady and she isn't answering. Its way to got to hot go without. What should we do?  Call someone ourself and get her to pay, suggestions would be appreciated! BTW...she is a MAJOR B.

Re: AC out in Rent house

  • I think if you call someone yourself, she might not pay - I'm not sure what your actual rights are, but if she's already a B, I can see this being a huge pain.  I'm not really sure what you should do though, sorry!
  • How long ago did you call?   I think you should probably give her a reasonable amount of time to return your call before taking action.

I'm sorry though, that really sucks.

  • I know who she always uses, and called them. They called her, got a ahold of her, and she will only use them and they can't come out until tomorrow afternoon/evening. And FYI...none of the ceilings fans in the house work and she won't fix them, and when she had the house painted the people she hired painted the windows shut...they won't open at all.

  • Since she's a B, I wouldn't pay for it and run the risk of not being paid back.  I would just get a room until it's taken care of.
  • Oh gosh, that's rough.

Well, with this heat I would say your pretty lucky to get someone to come out that soon.   I can say from recent experience there is quite a long wait because they are all so busy.

Can you stay with friends or at a hotel tonight?

  • I found someone who can come out today and went ahead and scheduled it. Justin is gonna keep trying to get with her to see if she'll pay. She is  such a b, can't stand her, but the rent it cheap! Our AC unit is like 35 years old, breaks down 2-3 times a year, the last time they fixed it they said they were recommending that she replace it, they called me and said she said no. Of all the times she has had to fix it she could have replaced it and we would be saving money on our electric bill (its was $300 last month for a 900 st ft house) She usually is so mean to me, and really won't even speak to me. She is under the "man rules the house" era, and the woman is complaicent and doesn't do anything, but raise kids. When I moved in, I was single and she said where is your husband. I said  (before I knew how she was) "Oh I am single, just got divorced and on my own for the first time' She said oh, you kids these days just don't take marriage seriously anymore. I said "Ma'am, my ex-husband was cheating on me, so don't tell me I don't take marriage seriously" Then she shut up. But then when DH moved in (before we got married...yes, we were living in sin, but who doesn't now, really?) Well anyways....I was adding him to the lease and she said "Y'all are living together and you aren't married?" I said "Yes ma'am, we just got engaged though" "She said well I don't think men and women should live together before they get married, " I said "well its our life" she said "Yes, and you will have to answer to God for that" I was speechless....thank goodness Justin didn't hear that little comment of hers.

  • Wow, what a piece.  Hopefully she will pay for the repairs with this new company!  And maybe it's shot and she'll HAVE to replace it... is that mean to hope that?  Good luck, and stay cool!
  • In a standard lease agreement, she has no responsibility whatsoever to pay for a different person.

Good luck and I hope you get reimbursed.

I hope that sometimes too...but not when its 110 outside. I can't wait until we can move. DH's truck will be paid off in a couple months and we are gonna start looking!

My only question, the company she picked couldn't come out, but other companies could. So wouldn't that just be her personal preference? I mean I can understand if NO one could come out, but other companies could.

You have to give her and "her company" reasonable time to respond.  I think that if they'll be out without one day, given this ridiculous heat wave that we're in, that's more than reasonable time.

Sit back. Relax. And be thankful that you have AC in your home.  I would stay somewhere else tonight and that's that.

Andplusalso, it's her house.  So it's her preference of AC guys that wins.

  • Her preference or not, it doesn't matter. Read your lease.... there is generally no set amount of time listed so she can do whatever she wants with no liability to you at all.

Getting someone to you the next day would be considered reasonable.   I know it is hot, but you'll have to get a hotel and deal, unfortunately.

  • If she's such a B and difficult to work with, why don't you move when your lease is up?  I get that rent is cheap, but is it really worth this hassle to you?
