Birthday Gift: Revisited

Hi Ladies-

I know this sounds impersonal, but I have decided on a gift for my BFF for her 30th.  She has recently started bootcamp and really enjoys it.  She has made several remarks that other girls in the class have sport watches that will count calories burned and monitor heart rate.

I have Googled these watches and plan to look at some in person this weekend.  But since I know there are some serious fitness girls on here, I thought I would ask if any of you have these and if so to rec your watch!

TIA!

Re: Birthday Gift: Revisited

  • Does she want GPS too or just a HRM? Is she fine with wearing the chest strap? What is your budget approx?

  • She hasn't mentioned wanting/needing the GPS function.  A chest strap?!?!?!  None of the ones I looked at online had one of these, but I guess if they come that way, she will be expecting to wear it.

    Between $100 and $150.

  • The Polar brand seems to be pretty popular at my gym for heart rate/calorie tracking...and it doesn't require a chest strap.  Unfortunately I don't know anything more than that about them.

She would probably only want the GPS function if she is a runner.

  • I agree with Tiffany about the GPS function if she's a runner.

Other than that I'm of no help, I just wanted to say that I think that will be a great gift and I don't think it's impersonal.  :)

  • I have a bodybugg, and I LOVE it! It's more accurate than a heart rate monitor, but I don't know by how much. I'm not sure what the going price is these days, though.
  • I got my husband the Garmin Forerunner 305 for his birthday since he recently started running and he loves it.  It does require a chest strap though but I know they have some models that don't require one.  He loves it because not only can he track his heart rate and his calories burned, but it measures how fast his pace was, how far he ran, etc. as well.  It was in the $110-120 range when I purchased it for him earlier this year.  It is pretty big and clunky though so I'm not sure the Forerunner 305 would be the exact model I'd get her; maybe the Garmin Forerunner 405CX instead?

  • Thank you all very much for the input!
  • I am coveting the Garmin 405. It is a GPS HRM though. It was the Amazon Gold Box deal yesterday and I missed it.

The HRMs with the chest strap tend to be more accurate. As PP stated, Polar makes excellent HRM watches. My friend has the FT60 and loves it.

  • I have a polar f11 and LOVE it.  It has the chest strap but honestly you dont notice it at all.  The polar ft4 and ft7 are really great options that are currently available.
